MP! Style Guide: How to choose the best lip colour for your skin tone

If you’re in the store or shopping online and don’t have the freedom to swatch twenty shades on the back of your hand, this is the next best thing.

The best way to determine the shades that go best with your skin tone is not to go by how dark or light your skin is but rather what your skin’s undertone is. Whether you have warm undertones (think: you look better in gold jewelry and red shirts) versus cool undertones (think: you look better in silver jewelry and blue shirts) should guide your lippy buying.

Cool undertones

Taylor Swift usually reaches for silver jewelry, a sign of her cool undertones. Because of this, her classic red lipstick leans toward more of a bluish red than an orangey red.

Reach for: reds and pinks with blue hints (not orangey reds or peachy pinks)

Warm undertones

Kylie Jenner’s warmer skin tone dictates her orangey red lipstick hues.

Reach for: reds and pinks with orange hints (not bluish reds or blush pinks)
