Sarah Hackett interview and ‘You Got Me Open’ today’s Alarm Pop!

Sarah Hackett is a 16-year old Canadian teenager who, like pretty much every other aspiring popstar, put some of her music on YouTube. Unlike most hopefuls, though, Sarah was spotted by High School Musical and Hannah Montana genius Andrew Lane, and over 380,000 Twitter followers later she’s readying herself to release her debut single!

‘You Got Me Open’ is an adorably infectious electroballad with a charming beachside video that’s racked up over 1 MILLION YouTube views – and it’s our Alarm Pop song of the day!

Miss Hackett describes Demi Lovato as her “greatest inspiration” so it was pretty much a given that we were always going to get along. We had a chat with her the other day – here it is…

Hi Sarah! We love ‘You Got Me Open’ here at Maximum Pop! What was it like to film your first video?
Thank you so much. It was really awesome to film the video. We filmed at one of the beaches in Marina Del Rey and it was absolutely beautiful. It was a great experience and I had a lot of fun. I got to meet and work with a lot of great people. I am very excited about the response ‘You Got Me Open’ is getting. I never imagined I would get such great feedback.

Is the songwriting aspect important to you as an artist?
I love being a part of the creative process. It is very therapeutic. I have always loved writing and I really want to be apart of every aspect of my work and writing is just one of many that I have been exposed to.

Do you write mostly on the piano or the guitar? And do you ever still play your violin?!
I write mostly on piano because it is the one instrument that came naturally to me. I can honestly just sit down and fool around on the piano for hours. I started taking guitar not too long ago and I really want to start learning more. I had taken violin lessons since I was about 6. I stopped playing a couple years ago just because of a lack of time and I really wanted to focus my attention on my vocals.

Fair enough. When Maximum Pop! was at primary school we learned the cello. Briefly. What is it about Demi Lovato that you love so much?
I grew up during the time when Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place and Camp Rock were extremely popular. Demi’s music has been there for me for years and I listen to it all the time. I can really relate to her and I find her story to be so empowering. She has inspired so many people and I would love to be able to do that some day.

Would you ever have considered auditioning on a show The X Factor or The Voice?
I think it would have been a cool experience to have been able to work with such talented people. I watch both X Factor and The Voice and I think it would have been a great opportunity had I not taken the route I am on.

As a Canadian artist, what are your thoughts on Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen?
Justin Bieber is extremely talented. He has a passion for what he does and I admire that. I love his new album ‘Believe’. Carly Rae’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ is such a fun and upbeat song. I love her album ‘Kiss’ and I’m excited for her and look forward to all she has to offer!

So what can we expect from the Sarah Hackett album?
You can expect my music to be relatable. I want my fans to feel like my music is there for them. I am still growing as an artist so my sound is still changing. I am incorporating live instruments in my music because I love performing with my band. I want to inspire people and I hope my music has that effect on people!

Thanks, Sarah!
