Pop the champagne, turn up the music, it’s time to celebrate! As of today, One Direction have been named ‘Biggest UK Artist in the World’ for 2014 by the IFPI. Whoop whoop!
Following another incredible year where they toured to sold-out stadiums worldwide and released their latest album ‘FOUR’, One Direction continue to retain their overwhelming success not just at home but throughout the entire globe.
The boys said “We just want to thank all our amazing fans everywhere. Every time we visit a new country we feel instantly accepted and it’s mind blowing to think the five of us have been able to connect with so many people.”
Even top dog, Mr Cowell had something to say about his favourite boyband. “I am absolutely delighted – and immensely proud – that One Direction were the biggest UK act in the world in 2014. To accomplish this for a third year in a row is a fantastic achievement – and especially pleasing as this latest album also highlighted the band’s skills as songwriters.” We feel you, Uncle Si. We feel you.
The IFPI (International Federation Of The Phonographic Industry) Global Recording Artist Chart is the most wide-ranging and respected global sales chart. Well, we’re hardly surprised considering FOUR hit no.1 on iTunes in 85 countries.
In the USA, One Direction have become the first ever band to debut at No.1 in the Billboard chart with each of their first four albums, awarded a place in the Guinness Book of Records 2015 as a result.
Since the album’s release they’ve won four American Music Awards, one ARIA award, been crowned Billboard’s Artist of the Year 2014 and also topped the 1 billion mark for plays on Spotify.
This is the third year in a row that the lads have been the most successful UK act in the world. SLAY.
The lads are currently in Japan for the second leg of their world tour, On The Road Again, before heading off to South Africa, Dubai, Europe, America, the UK and Ireland.
Congrats, boys! We bet they’ll be up all night for sure tonight.
