YOU REVIEW: This month we’re delving deep into the YA dystopian fiction ‘Insurgent’ the second book in the ‘Divergent’ trilogy by Veronica Roth. MP!er Katie shares her thoughts below.

INSURGENTUK_B Format_CVR.inddDescribe the plot of ‘Insurgent’ in a tweet – less than 140 characters please!
Revisiting our favourite characters from ‘Divergent’ we get to explore the factions and their history in greater depth, uncovering a few surprises on the way!

Have you read the first book in the ‘Divergent’ series?
Yup! And I thought it was brilliant!

Have you seen the movie adaptation of the book? If so do you think the characters were portrayed well?
I haven’t seen the movie unfortunately as I wanted to read all the books before I saw ‘Divergent.’

Without giving anything away, does the ending make you want to read the next in the series?
YES, YES, YES! There are so many shocks and twists along the way and the end of ‘Insurgent’ is such a cliffhanger! I didn’t see it coming at all.

What genre would you class the book as?
Dystopian, post apocalyptic fiction. I would say it fits the classic Young Adult genre but it should appeal to all ages, mainly because it’s brilliant!

What was the best bit?
It’s so hard to choose the best bit! You get to explore Four and Tris’ relationship a little further, and start to learn why they act the way they do – I enjoyed that. It is such a complex relationship and Tris and Four are both complicated characters, so I really liked the fact we could, in a way, get to know them better! It’s hard to go into my particular favourite bits as I don’t want to give too much away if you haven’t read it! Let’s just say there is plenty of action and thrills to keep you engaged and wanting to know more the entire length of the book!

Anything you didn’t like?
When it ended and I didn’t have the next book to hand!

Would you recommend the Divergent series to your friends?
I already have, and bought them copies for Christmas!

Do you think it would appeal to girls or boys more? Or both?
I think that, thanks to both strong female and male central characters the book should appeal to both guys and girls. Obviously there is quite an emotional vein throughout the series, but it has enough action and thrills to keep even the most unromantic reader involved :)

Anything else you’d like to tell us about the book?
Read it! Seriously. Don’t be put off by thinking it is just another ‘Hunger Games’ – it’s far more than that! Obviously it shares similar aspects (a female lead character, dystopian society, uprisings…) but the ‘Divergent’ series comes into it’s own and Veronica Roth is responsible for creating not only a great read but one of the hottest guys in fiction! (Four of course!)
