When we were given the chance to interview Christina Grimmie – our fave ever The Voice USA contestant – we jumped at it! Read our interview below where she chats her time on The Voice, what it’s like to be on the road with Selena Gomez and gushes over Fifth Harmony.
Hey Christina, obviously we’ve been massive fans of yours since we first discovered your YouTube channel four or five years ago, but you would have earned a lot of new fans after finishing third on The Voice USA. How was the experience for you?
It was an amazing experience! I learnt so much and grew so much as a person, a performer and as an artist. I could not have asked for a better experience.
All four coaches turned their chairs around for you in the Blind Auditions and you chose Adam Levine to be your mentor. Had he not turned around for you but the others had, who do you think you would have gone with?
Had Adam not turned around, I would’ve chosen Usher because of how enthused he was. Not only that, but I feel he would let me have free reign with the R&B in my voice and work really well with me.
Do you still speak to Adam or any of the other coaches?
Yes, Adam and I still keep in touch!
The UK version of The Voice returns for its fourth series this weekend. If you were to audition for our country’s edition, which coach do you think you’d work best with – Ricky Wilson, Sir Tom Jones, Rita Ora or will.i.am?
will.i.am. The man is a creative genius and one of my top musical inspirations. He has so much to offer!
We are absolutely loving your new single ‘Must Be Love’, what’s the story behind it?
Love is an interesting thing… Everyone sings about love; its complications, how it can become so confusing, and even how sometimes it can be misleading. This song, on the contrary, is about KNOWING you love someone or something and have the carefree, joyous spirit to shout it to the world.
We’re really excited to hear what else you’ve been working on, is there any news on when your new album will be released?
I’m hoping to have a 2015 album release. I wanna crank out new music to Team Grimmie soon, I can’t keep you all waiting forever!
Do you have any plans to tour the UK anytime soon? We need some Grimmie loving!
I am infact touring near you soon! I will be touring in Europe between January 26-February 25 and yes yes yes, I am coming to the UK!
You’ve already racked up an impressive 637,000 followers on Twitter. How do you find attention from fans? Do people act a bit crazy or are they quite calm when they meet you?
It depends, some people are awfully shy and others are absolutely crazy and I love it. I don’t think too hard when I post on Twitter, I just post things that I find hilarious or meaningful etc., and even advice that I give; my fans love to see my take on those things.
2014 was arguably the year of the girlband with Little Mix dropping their ‘Salute’ album in the US and Fifth Harmony taking over with their single ‘BO$$’. If you could put yourself in any girlband – past or present – which would you choose and why?
I would join Fifth Harmony in a heartbeat – their talent is THROUGH THE ROOF. I would probably even love to go back to the good old Spice Girls days and join forces with them!
You’ve toured a lot with Selena Gomez in the past – can you give us any goss on what happens backstage at a typical Selena gig?
Selena always rounded everyone up right before her show and holds hands with everyone and prays. I respect her so much for how she treated everyone around her. Never a diva, ever.
If you could tour with any other artist who would it be?
I would love to go on tour with Fifth Harmony, maybe even One Direction… dreaming big over here!
And finally, what do you hope 2015 holds for Christina Grimmie?
Lots of new music, new fans (FRANDS), maybe a little acting as well! And definitely looking forward to growth and depth as an artist. Hopefully going to continue to find myself throughout the year!
Christina is touring the UK with boyband Before You Exit in February. Dates and tickets are available here.
