Interview: We catch up with Christina Grimmie to talk music, The Voice and Selena Gomez!

Christina Grimmie is one of MP!’s favourite new popstars in the making right now. Fresh from her scene stealing turn on the most recent season of The Voice US – where she dazzled the likes of Cee-Lo Green and her mentor Adam Levine – the former YouTube star is gearing up for worldwide take over with her fab new single ā€˜Must Be Love’. We caught up with the lovely lady for a quick chat and here’s how we got on…

MP!: Hey Christina, congratulations on your new single ā€˜Must Be Love’. Tell us, how close is this to being the best song you’ve done?

Christina:Ā It’s up there on my list of favorites! It’s just a jam that’s why I like it. Forget about life and escape into 3 minutes of this musical funhouse haha.

MP!: There’s a bit of a country pop rock sound going on here. What attracted you to the song?

Christina:Ā The vibe of it isn’t bubblegum to me. It’s quite edgy and had some grit to it, that’s my style right there.

MP!: Who was the first person you played this song to and what was the reaction?

Christina: I showed my brother Mark right away. He absolutely loved it and said it had to be that song as my next single.

MP!: You’ve signed a deal with Island Records – congrats! But you had offers from your The Voice mentor Adam Levine and even Lil Wayne who both wanted to sign you to their labels. Was it a tough decision to make?

Christina: I had to weigh my options a bit and think about things harder of course. Island has been a dream so far and I can’t wait to release and album with them.

MP!: We hear you’ve got a new album on the way. Tell us what we can expect.

Christina: I haven’t began working on the album just yet! Need to get home from tour first and recoop. Then really dig into the album.

MP!: Who’s on your wish list for dream collaborations?

Christina: Skrillex. The man is a genius and paved a new way for music and it’s very inspiring.

MP!: You were a YouTube star first before you auditioned for The Voice. How has that background prepared you for The Voice and performing in general?

Christina:Ā Going on tour really helped me prepare for the Voice. I knew my way around stage very well by that point and it was more fun and less intimidating.

MP!: What advice do you have for any aspiring singer/songwriters uploading covers on YouTube?

Christina:Ā Be different; be unique; be yourself. Put your personal touch on each video.

MP!: Are you in touch with Selena Gomez?

Christina: I don’t see her very often, no, but she is still a sweetheart.

MP!: What’s the most bizarre fan encounter you’ve had?

Christina:Ā Nothing’s really been bizarre…maybe the ones asking if I’d kiss them is pretty crazy.

MP!: You recently went on tour with several contestants from The Voice USA. Who are your favourites?

Christina: I love them all, I don’t have a fave!

MP!: What’s a smartphone app you can’t live without?

Christina:Ā My Bible app.

MP!: What are the last three songs you downloaded?

Christina: Songs from Tessanne Chin’s new album!

Thanks Christina! ā€˜Must Be Love’ is out now.Ā
