This Year’s Radio 1’s Teen Awards To Honour UK’s Inspirational Teenagers

We love a good awards ceremony, especially when they’re jam packed with celebs! But this year, Radio 1’s Teen Awards won’t just be focusing on the famous.

This morning BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw announced that the R1 Teen Awards will return this October to celebrate the achievements of inspirational teenagers.

The glitzy awards ceremony will take place for the fifth year running on Sunday 19th October in the SSE Arena, Wembley, with Nick Grimshaw taking the role of host once again.

Details such as the performance line up and special guests are yet to be announced but will be revealed over the next few months. It’s all very exciting, isn’t it?

Talking about the subject, Grimmy says:

“The Teen Awards are one of my highlights of the year here at Radio 1. The crowd are always so up for it and the sheer noise of screams is out of control! I love the fact we honour teen heroes as well as pop stars. I can’t wait.”

Radio 1 and 1Xtra Controller, Ben Cooper stated,

“I want Radio 1 to celebrate and reflect the great work young people do in the UK and their positive contribution to society.”

The Teen Heroes is the biggest award at the ceremony, where Radio 1 celebrates the achievements of three of the year’s exceptional young people.  Listeners of Radio 1 can nominate anyone between the ages of 12-17 years old and fit in with one of the following categories:

  • Acted selflessly – someone who is an extraordinary person whose actions are rather selfless
  • Inspired others –  Someone who could be a role model within their community or done something rather inspirational
  • Acted with courage and bravery – displayed courage and bravery in a tough situation or has done something rather remarkable for someone

The radio 1 team will short list nominees before the panel of judges decide on the winner , which will include Teen Hero winner in 2013, Jeremiah Emmanuel, who campaigns against youth violence.

Jeremiah says:  “Being one of BBC Radio 1’s Teen Heroes in 2013 was life changing. It opened up many opportunities for me and my story was shared across the nation. The Teen Awards recognises outstanding young achievers all over the country. This year I will be part of the judging panel for the awards. I hope that my expertise and experience in community work and representing young people will bring a much-needed, unique edge to the panel.”

So, get your glad rags ready and prepare for one of the biggest events of the year!

Nominations are now open and you can submit your entry here. The closing date is 9pm on Sunday 17th August, so get a move on!

Tickets to the dazzling event will be announced within the next few months, so keep listening to Radio 1 as well as checking their Twitter (@bbcr1) and their Facebook.
