We’ve been waiting for what feels like an eternity to see what happens in Zoe Sugg’s next instalment of ‘Girl Online’, Penny’s totally head over heels in love with her rock god boyfriend Noah and we’ve got all the feels. We caught up with Zoe in-between her hectic YouTube life (and snuggling Nala) to get all the juicy details.
Your new book ‘Girl Online: On Tour’ has your lead character, Penny, go on tour with her rock-god-tastic boyfriend Noah. If you went on tour who would you take with you? That’s hard. I’d love to take Alfie and then some of my friends but they would probably have to pull straws.
To what extent would you say Penny, the lead character, and her life is based on you? I wanted my lead character to have a lot of similarities to me so that I could know and understand her life inside and out, when putting it on the page. We have a lot in common, she’s a blogger, lives in Brighton and also suffers from anxiety. My own personal experiences have really helped shape who Penny is and her story. However, she is a fictional character and of course a lot of what happens to her comes from my imagination.
Are there any messages you want readers to take away from Girl Online On Tour? Cyber bullying is an issue I feel passionate about addressing as this is something I have also unfortunately experienced. I think some people don’t realise that their words hurt. We should all be aware of what we say online. Penny experiences many things that I know first-hand that many of my viewers have experienced or asked my advice on. Things like bullying, falling out with friends, boys & anxiety. It is important to me that Penny has to go through many of the same things that other teenagers have to deal with.
Do you listen to music while you’re writing? Yes, I do like to have something on in the background. I listen to of a lot of Ellie Goulding, Sam Smith & Ed Sheeran. Easy listening.
What books do you like to read? Who is your favourite writer? I absolutely love ‘chick lit’ books as I find them an easy and fun read. A few of my favourite authors are Sophie Kinsella & Lindsey Kelk. I also LOVED ‘The Fault in our Stars’ by John Green and most recently ‘All the Bright Places’ by Jennifer Niven.
When you first started your Zoella blog, did you ever expect that it could lead to a career as an author? When I started writing my blog in 2009, I would never have imagined it would bring me the opportunity to make my teenage dream of being a published author come true. Of course, the blog was a great way to develop my writing skills!
