Haven’t heard of One Direction’s furry little mascot Rainbow Bondage Bear? Look no further

Even if you’ve been to a One Direction show in the past two years, without a keen eye it’s entirely possible to have missed spotting One Direction’s unofficial mascot.

Fans throw many things up on stage to Niall, Harry, Louis, and Liam—Doncaster Rovers jerseys, silly string, iPhones, caterpillar costumes, etc.—but few live on to be seen again. Except for one particular stuffed animal.

Meet this very innocent looking rainbow teddy bear, who was tossed up on stage in Manchester during the Where We Are Tour in 2014. He was given a new look with the addition of some kinky electrical tape, possibly with the help of 1D’s drummer Josh.

Ever since then, the bear—nicknamed Rainbow Bondage Bear, or RBB for short, by the fandom—has appeared in stadiums around the world, seemingly set up well before the concerts start and in various elaborate costumes.

When he got a mustache and a hat in Sydney at the beginning of the On The Road Again Tour, the nickname Teddy Mercury also caught on.

Later on in Brussels, a baby rainbow bear joined the mascot family.

The bears have also been spotted reading some very important literature.

Sometimes they even ride skateboards and hold baby bottles, like when a certain skateboarding band member has a baby scandal… Weird.

They also frequently have round colored stickers on them with faces drawn on, and many fans believe that the colors correspond to the colors on the boys’ microphones and represent how they’re feeling.

Some nights, the bears do not make an appearance, and their lack of presence near the stage feels strangely ominous and foreboding. Other nights, they sit proudly alongside framed pictures of famous people, often LGBTQ+ supporters or identifiers like Larry Grayson.

Rainbow Bondage Bear and his little colorful friend remain a mystery. Who dresses them everyday? Is there hidden meaning behind their elaborate costumes and sets? Are they a quiet way to tell the LGBTQ+ fans that One Direction concerts are a safe space, or are they trying to tell us more? What does it mean when they suddenly disappear and reappear?

If you’re lucky enough to be attending One Direction’s final few shows on their On The Road Again Tour this month, be sure to keep your eye out for these two rainbow stuffies. To keep track of their adventures, check out @rbb_updates on Twitter.
