Look out British music as a brand new superstar is waiting in the wings and she’s just come off the high of scoring a well-deserved third place on the coveted BBC Sound of 2014 poll which we’ve handily covered for you lot. Huzzah! Yes, she could have done with being a couple of places higher, but it’s all about the music, isn’t it? We think so too.
Banks – real, full-length, non-popstar name Jillian Banks – hails from Los Angeles, where according to extensive research carried out by MP! scientists, at least forty percent of all fantastic pop music comes from. However she loves working with up-and-coming British producers for her slick R&B-meets-electronic sound, having enlisted the likes of Totally Extinct Dinosaurs and Jamie Loon to work their magic over her soulful songs. She’s also got Lily Allen and Jessie J as fans, so we know she’s good.
Banks is that rare thing – a popstar who both screams ‘POPSTAR’ right in your ear when you listen to her stuff and yet seems a world away from the plastic cookie-cutter queens we’re used to seeing. Her voice is fantastic and she sounds like a soulful mix of Drake, Lorde, and Rihanna at her most chilled out, particularly on fantastic new tune ‘This Is What It Feels Like’.
However, she’s remaining down to earth about her music which she wrote as a way to help deal with her depression, and which she now hopes will help others too in the same spot. “A lot of times, people are ashamed of feeling weak and being rejected – so it’s liberating to be able to sing about those things. And it’s amazing when other people don’t feel alone because they hear it.” Banks told the BBC ahead of her success in the Sound of 2014 poll.
Here’s hoping that she gets as much success as she deserves. We’ll definitely be first in line to buy her album when it hopefully lands in 2014. She’s on Twitter (although her management does it), and we’ve also stuck the video for ‘This Is What It Feels Like’ so you can make up your own mind…
