‘Tyler Oakley’s ‘Binge’ shows that life will get better no matter the situation you’re in.’ MP!er Alysha shares her thoughts.

YouTube phenomenon, Tyler Oakley has just released his debut book, ‘Binge’ which talks about never before spoken about stories that you wouldn’t find on his YouTube channel.

We gave MP!er Jess a copy of the book as part of our You Review. Here’s what she thought about Tyler’s honest approach.

How would you describe Tyler’s ‘Binge’ in a sentence? The most intimate, relatable and insightful book I’ve ever read.

Tyler relives various personal topics that have happened to him, could you relate to any?  I could relate to a few of Tyler’s personal stories, but the one that stuck out to me the most was the one about his struggle with self image. I’ve struggled, and if I’m truthful, still have a few bad days now with the way I look. Reading his story showed me that I can get through these negative thoughts of myself by focusing on the future and by relying on the amazing people around me for extra support.

Do you watch Tyler’s YouTube videos? Was the book anything like you expected after you’d seen how he is online? I’ve been watching Tyler’s videos for 4/5 years- I absolutely love him! ‘Binge’ was a lot more personal than I was expecting it to be which I loved because we saw a completely different side to him, but there was also a lot of the Tyler we know and love in there too. It was the perfect balance between the typical Tyler Oakley attitude I expected, and the unexpected and detailed insight into his life before YouTube.

binge-9781501117695_hrHave you ever come up with a lie to get a photo with someone you fancy? Nope, I haven’t had to come up with a lie for it because I just ask him for photos and he’ll take one with me.. However there’s plenty of time for me to do that in the future.

Some of the stories had us laughing for ages, which part did you find the funniest? All of it. If I had to choose I’d say the chapters about the camp councillor, ‘a fecal matter’ and also Tyler’s anger at the lack of beetroot in his burger. I was in absolute stitches the whole way through! (I actually hate beetroot)

What do you think of the cover? Does it translate well to the stories in ‘Binge’? I love the cover! I think it’s perfect for the content of the book because it’s different and very unique, just like Tyler and his stories.

Have you read any other YouTuber books? What do you think of them? I haven’t, ‘Binge’ is the first YouTuber book I’ve read through.

Rate out of 10. A definite 10/10!

Anything else you’d like to tell us about ‘Binge’? ‘Binge’ has revealed parts of Tyler that have been disclosed from his viewers and the whole world until now. It’s written in a way that expresses his support for every single person going through the same things he’s been through, and how he’s managed to pass all of the negativity and turn into the influential person he is today. In my opinion, ‘Binge’ shows that life will get better no matter the situation you’re in.

I can honestly say that after nearly 5 years of loving Tyler Oakley, I’ve never been more admiring of him up until now because he’s willingly shared his difficult life experiences with his fans and that takes a lot of guts and strength to do. I hold so much respect for him as a YouTuber, a writer and a person- and I can guarantee that I will continue to support and watch his videos for years to come.
