Well MP!ers, in a nutshell: It’s a TV SHOW! It’s BRAND NEW! And it’s going head to head with BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT. Say hello to your new TV obsession and another reason to never make plans on a Saturday night. Keep reading for 5 things you need to know – there’s rotating chairs, “blind” auditions and Jessie J in big gold pants…
It’s a reality TV singing competition with a twist. Contestants audition to the judges, but the panel are facing the other way and aren’t allowed to see them. The purpose of these “blind auditions” is to create more Susan Boyle moments – apparently proving that music is just about the voice (see what they did there?).
If they like what they hear, the judges can press a big shiny button to spin their chair around and be in with the chance of securing the act for their team. The panel consists of note-hitter Jessie J, veteran Tom Jones, Cheryl Cole’s BFF Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue (he’s from The Script, in case you’re wondering).
If more than one judge wants an act, the hopeful gets to choose which one they want as a mentor. The contestants are then developed and pitted against one another in the dramatic Battles round (basically, the louder and shoutier you are, the better), with five artists from each team progressing to the live finals – where there’ll also be audience voting and special musical guests.
There’s already an amazing, OTT and very successful American version featuring Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green and insane diva Christina Aguilera who likes to snatch microphones and dive on stage for impromptu and ridiculous duets with the contestants.
RATINGS WAR! The show will premiere this Saturday (March 24th) on BBC1 – the same night as the grand return of Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent over on ITV. It promises to a bloody and epic battle and we can’t wait to see who comes out on top. Whose side are you on?
