5 amazing pop stars we discovered at The Great Escape Festival – listen to your new favs and find out why we love them

Two weeks back we left drizzly London and sent ourselves Brighton to attend the Great Escape Festival. The Great Escape is the best festival to discover the next big thing, and artists who’ve performed there in the past range from Adele and Haim to Iggy Azalea and Marina and the Diamonds. The festival takes place in venues around the city, so you can be in a pub one minute, a seafront club the next, and then a church. You never know where the night will take you, and when you might find your new favourite artist! We discovered lots of exciting new acts at The Great Escape 2015, so here are our ones to watch…

Shamir

Shamir is a bright, sassy and stylish young artist from Las Vegas,
whose music takes influence from disco, R&B and rap. His songs are
great, especially the super-catchy single ‘On The Regular’, but it’s his
fun personality and charisma that make him a star on stage. He
performed a selection of tracks from his new album ‘Ratchet’ at The
Great Escape, and had no trouble getting the cool festival crowd
singing and dancing along to his cheery tunes.

Aurora

Aurora is a sweet, shy 18-year-old girl from Norway, but when she
sings, she can win over any crowd. She silenced the audience with her beautiful vocals and majestic electro-pop songs at The Great Escape, but by the end of her set they were hollering in appreciation. Aurora may not be the next Taylor or Ariana, but she’s a very special future pop star in her own way. Her fans include Katy Perry, who recently tweeted about her video for ‘Runaway’.

Susanne Sundfør

susanne sundforIt was all about the Norwegian girls at The Great Escape this year, as another highlight from the festival was Susanne Sundfør. Her ethereal electro-pop songs sounded amazing in the acoustics of the expansive St George’s Church. Susanne is an indie artist who has gone pop with her incredible new album ‘Ten Love Songs’, and it has been a big success. Her UK fanbase is growing by the minute as more music fans discover her uniquely lovely sound.

Tobias Jesso Jr

You may have heard of Tobias Jesso Jr as he was linked to our beloved Taylor Swift (he says they were never an item), but it’s his music that will make him famous. Tobias is a singer-songwriter in the classic style, writing simple, heartfelt songs that appeal to fans of all ages. Among his fanbase are many celebrities, including past Great Escape performers Adele and Haim. He played an intimate set in a dark venue, leaving the audience emotional and impressed.

Ekkah

One of the most fun acts of the festival was girl duo Ekkah from Birmingham. They accompanied their upbeat songs with dance routines, but are also musically talented, playing the saxophone and keyboard as well as singing. What can’t these girls do?! They were clearly having a great time on stage, and their energy and enthusiasm rubbed off on the audience. There are plenty of 3 and 4 piece girl bands around but not many duos, so we think there’s a place in pop for Ekkah.
