Selena Gomez gets political: She’s donating proceeds from one of her tour dates to support LGBT rights

Selena Gomez has the biggest heart in pop.

So as you know, Selena has been touring the US as part of her huge ‘Revival Tour’ (which is coming to the UK in November, by the way).

On 7th June, the ‘Revival Tour’ stops in Charlotte, North Carolina. But there’s a little problem.

Recently, a number of pop stars have been cancelling their shows in North Carolina due to the passing of a new local law. The Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act (HB2) law – which you might know as the “bathroom bill” – has been seen as anti-LGBT as it says that transgender people can only use bathrooms that correspond with their sex at birth, which means if you were born a man, you must use the men’s room.

This obviously isn’t cool at all.

While some artists have cancelled their shows in protest, Selena has decided not to let her fans down by going ahead with the show. Now, proceeds from the remainder of the tour are already being donated to the Alliance for Lupus Research, as Selena is a sufferer herself. But for the North Carolina show, she will be donating to Equality North Carolina and “their effort to defeat this act of discrimination.”

What a woman! Can we make Selena the Queen of Equality? She deserves it. In a statement, Selena said:

“I am very fortunate to have grown up in a home where I learned from an early age that everyone should be treated equally. I went back and forth on whether I should cancel my concert in North Carolina and ultimately I think what is right for me is to move forward with my show and donate a portion of the proceeds to Equality North Carolina and their effort to defeat this act of discrimination. I’ve been reassured the venue I will be performing in has gender neutral bathrooms as I want everyone coming to my show to be welcomed. I feel like my generation is the most progressive one yet and believe there will be a day soon when laws like HB2 won’t even be a consideration.”

Good for You, Selena! We’ve been a bit concerned about pop stars cancelling shows due to this ridiculous law but it’s great to see Selena standing up against the system and fighting back.

In other Selena news, it was recently announced that her new single is ‘Kill ’em With Kindness’ and it’s already in the top 20 on Billboard’s Pop Songs Airplay chart. It’s rumoured that the official video will be released tomorrow, and we can’t wait to see it.

What do you think? Is Selena making the right choice? Tell us your feelings on this @maximumpop
