Being a Ron Weasley lookalike sounds like a pretty cool job, right? Just imagine all the weird and wonderful situations you’d find yourself in. Attending massive Harry Potter themed conventions? Strolling around ancient castles that eerily resemble Hogwarts? It seems like a blast.
Maximum Pop! recently spoke to 26-year-old, Lewis Parker. He’s the UK’s official Ron Weasley lookalike and gets booked for various parties and events all across the county.
Lewis told us what being Rupert Grint‘s secret twin is actually like and how it’s impacted his life over the years. Here’s what he had to say…
Hi Lewis! When was the first time you realised you looked like Rupert/Ron?
I was first introduced to the Harry Potter universe when I went to the cinema with my family to see ‘Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone’. My parents were shocked to see the resemblance to Ron – it was as if I was on the big screen! As more films were released, and the Harry Potter world grew, my mother wanted to find me a lookalike agent. But, being a ginger haired teenager and being negatively labelled Ron Weasley and bullied at school it wasn’t something that I wanted to peruse at that particular time. As I got older my confidence grew and I took it upon my self to approach an agency.
So are you a fan of the Harry Potter world?
Yes! It means a lot to me. I’ve grown-up with it being a big part of my live. I’m thankful for the Harry Potter films. My resemblance to Ron has given me confidence, job opportunities and I’ve met some great people along the way.
We’ve gotta ask… what Hogwarts House are you in?
Well, seeing as Ron Weasley’s in Gryffindor, I would have to opt for that. My own personality is somewhat like Ron’s. He takes on a laid back attitude to life and our humour is similar. Ron is brave and loyal to his friends. He’s also known for his random one-liners. I’d like to think my quick wit mirrors his along with all his other traits… Even down to us both being constantly hungry!
What’s the strangest thing that’s happened to you as a Rupert/Ron lookalike?
I wouldn’t like to pin point one strange moment, as the whole experience within itself is pretty surreal. When you think about it, getting dressed up as a wizard and walking around as a fantasy character is pretty strange anyway. But I love performing for the fan base and the response I get is incredible.
As the UK’s official Ron Weasley lookalike, you’ve been booked for heaps of gigs. Can you tell us about some of those?
The gigs I do are all so varied, it’s hard to pick just one as my best experience. A few gigs I’ve done recently consisted of me attending a Harry Potter convention in Nottingham and that was a great experience. The fan base was huge as it was solely aimed at Harry Potter fans. I met some amazing people that day – some of which I still have contact with.
Another recent gig was the opening of a Specsavers! This was a completely different experience as I was working with the general public, some of which weren’t Harry Potter fans, but they all recognised me and wanted photos. I recently attended Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. That’s a great setting. You actually feel like your at Hogwarts! Another new venture was filming on set for a couple of different things – one being a cancer research online advert. Every gig is different and every gig gives me new challenges, but each experience is an achievement and I always finish a gig with a sense of satisfaction.
You’ve also posted a few snaps on your Instagram where you look like Ed Sheeran recently…
I currently haven’t done any work as Ed Sheeran yet, but this is becoming my next adventure. I’m a big fan of Ed and love his music. In my spare time, I find myself playing his songs on guitar.
Do people ever come up to you when you’re out and about?
Having people come up to me and passing comments about my likeness to both celebrities happens on a daily basis. I do get more comments for Ed than Rupert. I think it’s down to my sense of style and Ed more recently being in the public eye. To have people stop me in the streets for photos or have people crying with happiness at an Ed Sheeran gig as they believe I’m the real deal does make me feel like a celebrity for a short period of time.
Has either Rupert or Ed commented on the resemblance?
Neither of them have passed personal comments on my likeness but I would be over the moon if they did! Saying that, I did appear in an Ed Sheeran fan video where he personally selected the people to be involved. He may well of picked me due to my likeness of him or Rupert. I have met Chris Rankin who played Percy Weasley and Hugh Mitchell who played Colin Creevey in the Harry Potter films and they both passed comments on how much I look like Rupert both in and out of costume.
So this is a super important question. Would you rather go for a butterbeer with Rupert Grint or Ed Sheeran?
I would rather have a butterbeer with Rupert Grint! I think I look more like him and the experience would be like looking in the mirror. But, if the opportunity to have a butterbeer with Ed Sheeran did come up, I wouldn’t say no!
Another tough one. Would you rather watch the Harry Potter films or read the books?
I love to just curl up on the sofa, especially in winter and watch the Harry Potter films. Sadly I’m not a bookworm like Hermione.
How about this one… Would you rather quote Harry Potter for the rest of your life or sing ‘Galway Girl’ by Ed Sheeran nonstop?
I would rather quote Harry Potter for the rest of my life. I think it would be much easier to string sentences together using quotes! In all honesty, I already find myself quoting Ron sometimes.
