‘Red Queen’: why you should read Victoria Aveyard’s new fantasy series RIGHT NOW

‘Red Queen’ by Victoria Aveyard is part of Maximum Pop!’s book club for the month of July – and we are loving it. Full of twists and turns, deception and crashing revelations, this is not a book you will be reading slowly. In fact, you may feel the need to power through it in a night – next day grogginess be damned.

If you’re not already convinced that this a book you need in your life, then we here at MP! want to share a few reasons why you most certainly do.

1. The cover is beautiful.

Bookish types are complex creatures. We love books, regardless of their shape or age, claiming to love what’s inside more than any shallow appearances – and yet, we find ourselves lusting after pretty covers. It’s a human frailty and we’ve accepted it: we need pretty books to gaze at, stroke and hold close. And that’s exactly why we need ‘Red Queen’.

2. It’s better than you think.

‘Red Queen’ is wrapped up in politics and power, something we can really get into if it’s not too heavy or dense. Nothing slows down your reading momentum more than trying to wrap your head around overly-detailed politics and an impossibly-long cast list.

Victoria Aveyard’s fantasy is not like this. Simple, yet complex, in-depth without being overwhelming, she weaves a world which you can slip right into without too much preamble.

3. Mare is a great hero.

We hope you fall for Mare as much as we did. A Red, a thief, and a little rough around the edges, she doesn’t seem like a natural hero. Honour doesn’t spur her on, but love does – for her family, her friends, her people – and though her decisions can seem a little messy and regrettable, we really admire her and these kinds of real female protagonists

4. It’s unbelievably compelling.

Surprise after surprise, this book is layered with secrets and deception that will keep you reading late into the night. Not only that, but Aveyard also packs in kisses, dances, assassinations, and hold-your-breath fight scenes.

5. Victoria Aveyard is an amazing writer.

Check out these awesome quotes:

“The truth is what I make it. I could set this world on fire and call it rain.”

“The gods rule us still. They have come down from the stars. And they are no longer kind.”

“His lips are on mine, hard and warm and pressing. The touch is electrifying, but not like I’m used to. This isn’t a spark of destruction, but a spark of life.”

6. Amazing world building.

Do you ever pick up a fantasy book and for a while, you think you know what’s going on, but then suddenly – boom, the world you thought you understood makes no sense. Or else, it’s boring, or cliche, or too over the top. Fantasy worlds demand skill – which is exactly what Victoria Aveyard has.

From the Silver cities, to the ruined warzones and Mare’s poor home town, Victoria absorbs you into Mare’s world effortlessly.
