American Singer-songwriter, model and actress Pia Mia is a YouTube sensation who first gained popularity over her cover of Drake’s ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home’ and has recently been signed with Interscope Records, releasing an EP called ‘The Gift’. Not to mention she has one of her songs, ‘Fight For You’ featured on the soundtrack of Divergent. We caught up with the busybody for a quick chat…
Hi Pia! We’ve been loving Mr President and been playing it all day at MP! HQ. What made you decide to post videos on YouTube?
When I was ten years old, my sister Kandis created a YouTube account for me to post videos of me singing both cover songs and my originals. People responded very positively and that encouraged me to keep posting more videos. I love connecting with my fans, the Wolfpack Kingdom, and my YouTube account was the beginning of it all!
So many artists such as Justin Bieber and 5 Seconds of Summer have been discovered via YouTube, when did you first get discovered? Did you think someone was pulling your leg?
I was first discovered by someone managing a girl group in Los Angeles after they had seen my YouTube videos. This led to me leaving Guam and moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. In Los Angeles I went to auditions, met with vocal coaches, and continued to post on YouTube. One day, I was recognized while I was walking into Urth Cafe by the wife of one of Babyface’s producers who asked if I was a singer. It was super random, just like my whole journey!
Your music is something we would be dancing to at a party or blasting in our car on a road trip! Who would you say are your music influences?
My music is really influenced by the culture on Guam, where I grew up, and by my life experiences. I keep a journal of anything and everything and most of my records are taken directly from my journals.
Who is an artist or producer you would absolutely love to work with?
I would love to work with Naughty Boy.
Mr President is a really summery track- are there any signs of an upcoming album? We’d need to add more songs of yours to our playlists!
Yes, I’ve been working on my album for almost a year now. The single is coming soon, and the album will be out this year. I’m super proud of the work we’ve done on this record, and I can’t wait to share it with the world.
What comes first – music or the lyrics?
Music and lyrics are equal to me. You can have the most incredible lyrics, but if the track is corny, it won’t work and vice versa. I am very involved when it comes to making the beats and when it comes to the lyrics. Everything has to be just right.
We’ve got some quick this or that questions for you-
One Direction or The Vamps?
Heels or sneakers?
Big party or small sleepover?
Hands for feet or feet for hands?
Hands for feet
Have a horses head or a giraffe’s body?
Run through town naked or kiss a snail?
Run through town naked
Fall over in front of Niall Horan or accidentally burp in your crush’s face?
Fall over in front of Niall Horan
Finally, what’s coming up for you in the second half of 2014 that we should mark in our diaries?
My first ever single will be coming out, so that’s going to be something exciting for the Wolfpack Kingdom. And I have plans to be in London in September- it’ll be my first time, I can’t wait.
Divergent is out now on DVD, Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray Steelbook and for download
