Pharrell Williams goes anime in the ‘It Girl’ video

Pharrell has clearly been spending a lot of time with his Daft Punk mates watching their Toei Animation produced film Interstellar 555 – the one made up of music videos for their Discovery album, which includes ‘One More Time’. That’s or he’s heard Sailor Moon (90’s reference!) is coming back and he’s just getting that Japanimation vibe. Ka Ka Ka Kawaii!

The G I R L album has been massive, with ‘Happy’ being the UK’s most downloaded song of all time, so we think Pharrell’s earned the right to do whatever he wants with his singles, even if that means releasing a not exactly radio friendly track with an anime video.

The video, directed by a Mr. Fantasista Utamaro (best name of all time), features a load of 8-bit video games visuals, a chibi Pharrell and lots of big-eyed anime girls chilling at the beach. It perfectly fits the laid-back sound of this tune which, thankfully, isn’t a Jason Derulo cover.

Now Pharrell has officially made anime cool, go and buy all the DragonBall Z boxsets.
