Olly Murs interview – Music And Me

Cheeky chap, tight-trouser-wearer and Xtra Factor presenter Olly Murs answers MP!’s Q&A on his musical history:

[column width=half]

The first song I remember hearing is…
‘Bad’ by Michael Jackson.

The first song I bought was…
‘Friday Night’ by 911!  I’m not even kidding!

I listen to my music mostly on…
My laptop.

What music moment first made you think “I want to be a pop star”?
It would have to be when I went to see Justin Timberlake in concert in 2002. I was blown away by how talented he was – and aspired to be able to perform like him one day.

Have you ever illegally downloaded a song?
I did actually when it first came out – but the song was such bad quality so I never bothered again!

What’s the most the played song on your iTunes?
Kings Of Leon – ‘Use Somebody’.

How many songs do you have in iTunes?
About 3,000.

The most shameful song?
Jedward!!! They made me buy it!

If you could make three artists more known who would they be and why?
Lonsdale Boys Club, Lilygreen & Maguire, Yasmin. The first two are my support acts on my arena tour!! Brilliant bunch of lads and I really hope they do well this year. Yasmin has had singles out already, but I really think that she deserves more success as she’s very talented!

Can you play a musical instrument?
I can play guitar – but not to a high standard, and I’m learning to play the piano after my tour as I’ve just bought a grand piano for my house.

Can you make a musical note with your body?
What a weird question! I don’t think so, other than beatboxing!

What’s your favourite pop lyric and why?
It would have to be from Stevie Wonder’s ‘Sir Duke’: “Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand, with an equal opportunity, for all to sing, dance and clap their hands.”

What song do you wish you’d written and why?
It would have to be a Beatles song like ‘Yesterday’ as I could probably live off the royalties for the rest of my life!!

Last album you bought and regretted playing?
I haven’t bought anything I’ve regretted playing to be honest! I always preview it on iTunes or Spotify before I buy any albums!

What do you listen to when you’re feeling sad?
Otis Redding.

What’s your getting ready song?
Chase & Status – ‘End Credits’! This never fails to get me in the mood.

Last album you bought?
Lana Del Rey – Born To Die.

Best album ever?
Kings of Leon – Only By The Night.

Favourite music video?
Bruno Mars – ‘The Lazy Song’. It’s so simple and wouldn’t have cost much to make, but it’s a great idea and went viral around the world.

What radio station do you listen to?
Mainly Radio 1 or Capital, but I am always travelling round the country so like to pick up the local radio stations in the car!

Is your iTunes collection organised?
Yes by album, and I have a couple of playlists that I made up.

Best artist you discovered on YouTube?
Jessie J when she was just singing into her computer in her bedroom or hotel rooms!
