YouTube is such a huge community that has been building rapidly for ten years. We always hear about Daily Grace, Shane Dawson and the like, but what about other cool content creators who we should know about?
We’re interviewing less mainstream YouTubers that we think you definitely need to know about and love just as much as we do! We’ve spoken to Ollie Martin who has 6K subscribers and had a chat about his experience with YouTube.
What sort of content do you post?
Usually I post vlogs about things that I find interesting or in relation to something that’s happened recently in the world. But normally always with a heap of sarcasm and reality because that’s just my sense of humour.
What inspired you to create a YouTube channel?
I used to watch a few YouTubers about 5 years ago and after about 2 to 3 years of watching them and marvelling at the videos and online personas they’d created, I decided I’d give it a shot and here we are today, two years down the line!
Which YouTubers do you admire?
I’ve always really enjoyed Lex’s videos she’s one of the people who can always make me laugh with what she says. Not to mention that alongside her hilarity, she is also very sound with her opinions and views pressing issues and I really respect the way she balances comedy with real-world-issues.
I also really admire my friends, Niki and Sammy. Having known them since their inception at about 200 subscribers, watching them grow to pass 100K in such a short time is incredible. It’s great to see them stay so grounded and continue to promote the positivity and confidence they have done since the beginning; they really inspire me to make my own stuff whilst also being my friends. It’s crazy.
Describe yourself in 5 words:
Witty, sarcastic, constantly-hungry and tall.
If you could collab with anyone YouTube?
I’d really like to get on Teens React one day, I think it’d be really cool to just be shown something and filming a reaction. I don’t really know, I just really love that channel, it’s hilarious.
What is something we absolutely need to know about you?
Probably that I’m just a lot taller than people seem to expect. Whenever I get recognised, people always seem shocked by my height and have just assumed that I’m small because I sit down in my videos.
What can we expect from you in the future?
I really want to keep up with what I’m doing on YouTube at the minute, I’m really glad to be uploading weekly, it’s really cool getting to interact with my audience so frequently. Hopefully, over the long summer between finishing school and university I can have some time to ramp up the uploads and get cracking with my channel. I really love making videos, it’s so great.
What are your goals for your channel?
I try not to think too much about goals for my channel because once you get sucked into the numbers game, it’s so hard to get out of. But I’d really like to hit 10,000 subscribers one day, I think 5 figures would be a nice thing to look at. But really, it’s already enough for me to have so many people listening to what I have to say at the moment, I couldn’t possibly imagine talking to 6,000 people at once, but with YouTube, I guess that’s possible!
What tips do you have for someone thinking about starting their own channel?
The best advice I could ever give to someone starting YouTube is to be yourself, act naturally in front of the camera, make friends in the community and try to upload regularly because that seems to be the best way to keep in touch with your audience!
Camping or staying in a hotel?
Definitely a hotel; I already live in the countryside so I have enough fresh air. Besides, hotels normally have wifi and unfortunately at this point, trees don’t.
Books or eBooks?
This is genuinely difficult. I love the smell of books, but my kindle is so practical, I read 14 books on holiday last year and it only weighed 112 grams. But I have to stay faithful to books, I love books so much.
One Direction or 5SOS:
That’s easy, One Direction.
Coffee or tea?
I’d say that I drink more tea, but I love grabbing a coffee when I’m out and about. So I’m gonna have to say tea at home and coffee when out (is this cheating????)
Slipping in front of your favourite YouTuber or sneezing on your crush?
Definitely slipping in front of my favourite YouTuber, I think it’d be a great way to make friends with them. Personally, I can’t imagine anything worse than sneezing on your crush, I mean, what’s one way of securing a life of loneliness other than being known as ‘the guy who sneezes on you’?
