We’ve all heard the usual snobby arguments against pop music – “It all sounds the same”, “No one plays their own instruments or writes their own songs” – more times than we can count. Artists like Jake Bugg, Boy George and more are always quick to denounce our fave pop stars and One Direction are no exception. Whatevs’.
However it seems there’s at least one Serious Artiste in the band’s corner and surprisingly it’s none other than Nick Mason from legendary, 70s prog rock group Pink Floyd (ask your groovy uncle). When asked at a recent awards ceremony about his thoughts on the lads and the state of pop music in general, the drummer told The Sun;
“They have some good songs. I don’t subscribe to this idea that musicians don’t make good music anymore. The standard of musicians is higher now than it was in my day,”
High praise indeed! Mason also went on to talk about the X Factor, saying;
“I’m not a big fan of The X Factor but it is brilliant television. People assume it’s a stepladder to stardom but it probably leads to a lot of disappointment for people.”
Interesting perspective we must admit. What do YOU think about Nick’s comments? Is he right? As always, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below…
