There’s been a lot of rumours flying around about which classic Disney will sprinkle some live-action magic onto next, so we thought we’d compile together the complete guide to what’s been announced and when to expect it.
We’ve already seen this Disney character in live-action in the form of Glenn Close, but now Emma Stone is about to take a walk in those monochrome heels and we are more than a little bit excited for it. We imagine it’ll be along the same lines as ‘Maleficent’, proving that the good vs evil plot in ‘101 Dalmatians’ isn’t always so black and white — pun entirely intended, obvs.
As well as being spoilt with ‘Peter Pan’ in real life motion picture, it turns out we’re also getting a ‘Tinkerbell’ movie, portrayed by none other than Reese Witherspoon. To be honest, this might just be the most exciting of them all. We love Tinkerbell — she’s by far the sassiest fairy around and she’s also super loyal to Peter. We think these are pretty admirable traits to have in any friend.
3. ‘Maleficent 2’
Hell yeah, you heard right — more of Angelina Jolie’s incredible cheekbones. Honestly, #Goals.
OK, we’re not entirely sure we’re emotionally ready for a live-action ‘Dumbo’. We can’t say we’ve watched the original in a while, because it left us pretty unstable and we didn’t stop crying for about a week. But, as with anything Disney, we’re certain it’ll be absolutely ah-mazing and that the CGI is going to be scarily real.
5. ‘A Wrinkle in Time’
Take a deep breath and sit down, because this one is brand new information. As much as we love seeing a classic get a little face lift, what is even better is a brand new story pushed through the magical Disney studios and made into something truly stunning. ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ is an adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s young adult science fantasy novel. Yes, that’s right — Disney does YA! We’re so game for this.
6. ‘The Jungle Book 2’
After the huge success of Jon Favreau’s ‘The Jungle Book’, it’s not surprising they’re planning to follow up with a sequel. We wonder if it’ll follow the same storyline as the 2003 animated sequel and, if so, who will play Shanti?
7. ‘Jungle Cruise’
This is another new one on the Disney scene, this time set to feature Dwayne Johnson, otherwise known as The Rock. The title of this film is the same as one of the attractions that features in a lot of the Disney theme parks, so we’re intrigued to see how the two relate.
8. ‘Mary Poppins’ sequel
A sequel to ‘Mary Poppins’?! It’s only been approximately 2849010 years! But seriously, we’re under good authority that this film is probably going to be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Probably. (And yes, we may have had to Google that spelling, don’t judge.) Emma Blunt and ‘Hamilton’s‘ Lin-Manuel Miranda are said to be involved, so it’s sure to be fantastic times a billion.
9. ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’
Another story Disney is set to put its spin on is ‘The Nutcracker’ — although we bet you’ve at least heard of this one. If you’ve seen the Barbie version (which was honestly life changing), then you’ll know the tale follows a girl who is entrusted with a precious Nutcracker. When the clock strikes twelve (as seems to be the case with many fairytales — what’s up with that?), the Nutcracker comes to life. There’s also an evil Mouse King evolved. Honestly, it’s wild.
None of these titles have been given release dates yet, but are expected to receive them in the next coming months, so keep your eyes peeled. And, in the meantime, let us know @maximumpop which Disney movies from this little list you are most excited to see come to the big screen?
