We sent our secret agent, Unimpressed Rainbow Unicorn, undercover to find out what makes the perfect music video

We’re gonna let you in on a little secret…

Over the last 12 months Maximum Pop! has been conducting a highly sensitive, covert operation in the name of pop itself. We were tasked with monitoring the activities of the world’s favourite pop stars in order to discover exactly how they make their music videos so mind-blowingly awesome. So we sent our undercover reporter, Unimpressed Rainbow Unicorn, to snoop around the sets of some of the biggest vids of the last year.

(He was the least conspicuous of our team…)

Here’s the findings so far:

1) Hypnotise

URU’s main finding from Zayn‘s video is that you can use a kaleidoscope effect to hypnotise gullible people into buying your records. We humans are easily led you see, unlike rainbow unicorns ofc.

2) Twerk your ass off

Humans like to gyrate. Humans like music. Unimpressed Rainbow Unicorn (or URU for short) learned how to twerk from Rihanna, which led him to the conclusion that, if you gyrate and sing at the same time, you’re on to a winner.

Also, just take a minute to appreciate how well he blends in to the surroundings in this video. A true master of disguise.

3) Use a little magic

URU learned from Little Mix that a smidgen of black magic goes a long way. He wasn’t too impressed that they squandered their magic powers on making a girl fart in their music video, but URU’s never really impressed by anything anyway.

 4) Derobe

You can also strip off to impress. In fact, this is one of the most common techniques in pop nowadays.

URU was clearly very unimpressed by Shawn‘s fit bod, which makes one of us… *drools*.

5) Get dramatic

Everybody loves a diva and it’s not a pop music video if you’re not rolling around in the snow screeching in hysterics.

(Even the balmy British summer weather at the shoot for Demi‘s video for ‘Stone Cold’ couldn’t cheer URU up).

NOODLERELLA

6) Be #goals

Everything about Fifth Harmony‘s videos is made to impress (unlike the sixth member of the group who is considerably less talented at flexing). The style, the bods, the hair, the horns, you want it all.

NOODLERELLA

7) Throw in some crazy choreo

Dance crazy. Dance sexy. Dance Unicorn. Doesn’t matter what do you, as long as you shake it boo.

NOODLERELLA

8)  Be part of a squad

Anyone who’s anyone is part of a squad nowadays and you can feed off your mates’ star quality to make your vid pop.

Lucky URU got the chance to be part of two massive squads.
