Why you need ‘Monster’ in your life: one of 2015’s best YA books + “Hogwarts but with mayhem”

Monster jacketWant 3 good reasons why ‘Monster’ by CJ Skuse NEEDS to be on your TBR list this October? Look no further, lost and confused bookish folk! We here at MP! are here to help you with your literary woes with a little help from The Telegraph, who just so happen to be fans of CJ too: “CJ Skuse is one of the most consistently entertaining YA writers around and ‘Monster’ is another rollicking adventure.”

1. Set in a prestigious boarding school over Christmas, it’s been described as “girls Hogwarts but with mayhem substituted for magic”. If that’s not enough of a reason for all you Potterheads, we don’t know what is.

2. It’s been named one of 2015’s BEST YA books, alongside other incredible reads like Louise O’Neill’s ‘Asking For It’ and ‘The Rest Of Us Just Live Here’ by Patrick Ness. Lofty company, we know, but we think ‘Monster’ can hold its own amongst these YA giants.

3. It’s a perfect Halloween read with jumps and scares and humour rolled up into one page-turning read.

The Telegraph says, “The dialogue is snappy, the nicknames witty (the Golden Snitch, Mrs Stool-Softener) but you might not want to read the final chapter alone in the house . . . or while you’re eating . . . as you find out the truth about the Beast of Bathory. Great fun.”
