Refusing to open bookish mail and bridging the gap between books and beauty: a Q&A with booktuber LovingDemBooks

Recently we got the chance to put a few questions to booktuber Grace (of LovingDemBooks) and find out ALL the answers to what life is like on YouTube, how she got started, and the reason why she saved an insane number of book packages for two months before opening them.

What first attracted you to booktube and made you begin posting your own videos? Prior to my friend Maddie telling me that she made book videos on YouTube, I never even knew that a booktube community existed! I will forever be grateful that she introduced such a wonderful community to me. After watching her make fun book videos and connect with other booktubers, I decided that I would give making my own videos a shot and look what’s happened since!

How long have you been an active member of the community? I made my first video in April 2014. I’ve been a part of the booktube community for 2 amazing years now and can’t wait for many more!

What equipment do you use to film your videos? I film on a Canon Rebel T5i. I use photography lights with umbrellas for lighting, some old tripod that was my grandpa’s from the 90’s, and use iMovie as my editing software.

For anyone unfamiliar, can you describe your channel and content in only one sentence? A channel that uploads videos that integrate books, reading, comedy, fashion, and beauty every Sunday!

Booktube has become a massive online influencer in its own right, growing and growing each day. What sets your channel apart from the mass? I love to make videos that integrate books and beauty, as well as comedy! I don’t think many book channels do that, and I love how my channel can be a bridge between the beauty and book communities. I also love to make fun videos with my siblings. They’re received a ton of positive feedback and are definitely some of my funniest videos.

‘Ginormous Book Haul Unboxing’ is one of your most popular videos. Can you tell us what went into making it and what it’s reception from your viewers was like? I collected the books that I was going to unbox and haul in that video for about 2 months prior to actually filming it. I remember my parents yelling at me for accumulating so many packages and not even opening them…hah! The raw footage itself was so long, so I cut it down because I knew that nobody would want to sit and watch a 30 minute book haul. I think that a lot of my viewers enjoyed being able to see so many books at once in a short amount of time, which is why the video has been so successful!

Thanks so much to Grace for chatting to us! If you’re interested in her videos you can watch them here, or tweet your own questions to her @grayczhuang.
