Julian Bunetta, the amazing producer and songwriter who helped One Direction create ‘Story of My Life’ and ‘Steal My Girl’ (just to name a few), recently spoke with Billboard about the big 1D hiatus news.
Well, we’re sending him flowers, because he sure calmed our nerves about what’s going to happen—and what’s been happening—with Harry, Louis, Niall, and Liam.
When creating the fifth album (done while on the road, in hotel rooms, as shown in Niall’s Instagram above), Julian said, “There was a feeling of, ‘Well, we’re going to take a break, and anything in the world can happen during that time off.’ It’s the first time of there being some uncertainty, of not having things planned out beforehand, since they were 16 years old.”
On the new songs, Julian said, “There’s a song about losing someone that isn’t Zayn. There’s also a song about the band being on shaky ground and not knowing what the future is. There are songs about love, there’s a song that is a little more sexually charged. It’s all over the map.”
He added, “There was definitely a vibe of making [the album] the best it can possibly be, and knowing it has to last as long as it needs to until we make another record — if we make another record.”
Okay, but if ‘Drag Me Down‘ was a taste of what’s to come on the fifth album, we know Julian and the boys succeeded.
Julian made it clear to Billboard that the break wasn’t something they decided on overnight, and that it wasn’t a dark cloud looming over their heads while creating new music. “When you’re faced with some uncertainty, you appreciate the moment more,” he said. “It was definitely one of the most fun album-making processes I’ve had because of that.”
Thanks so much for making us feel better about this whole situation, Julian. Can’t wait to hear what album five sounds like.
