If you stalk us regularly, you’ll be aware that we recently had Joshua Micah take over our Twitter. Now, we’ve had a good old chinwag with the American musician and you can read everything we discussed right here.
Hi Joshua! How are you? We are totally in love Blueprints! What inspired you for this song?
Hello again! I’m doing great. Thanks for checking out Blueprints! The song was written about a high school experience. I was invited by close friends to an event at a bar in my hometown. At this bar, I run into the “popular girl” in high school. I was a freshman at the time and she was a senior. I used to have a big crush on her but she always just ignored me. This night, however, she was making eye contact with me all night. After she had a few drinks, she comes to me at the end of the night and begins to speak as if we were close friends! As we were talking, she started getting closer, and from what I was sensing, wanted me to take her home. Instead, I just played it cool and treated her the way she’d always treated me in the past. Blueprints is about that night and making smart decisions.
What made you decide to pursue a career in the music industry?
To be honest, it was kind of accidental! When I graduated from high school, I was given the opportunity to either go to college or go to Spain for a month to record the music I had been writing – I wound up going to Spain. Apparently people thought I was good and offered to help guide me towards a professional level of artistry. I’m still very grateful for that!
Who would you say influences your sound?
I don’t think I’m influenced by any singer or band when I am writing my music. I am more influenced by the inspiration I have at that moment. I am a huge fan of Coldplay though….I might subconsciously pull ideas from them..lol.
How did you get to where you are today? Was it as hard as you first assumed?
From a young age, my parents always encouraged me to play music. They saw I loved it and provided me with many instruments growing up. I eventually started a band and thought we would “make it big”, but, as many young bands do, we split up. When I went to Spain to record my music with my cousin Micah, he and his friend, Oliver helped me craft my songs. They encouraged me to give it a shot. The music we made caught the attention of the record label I am currently with, SeaToSun. I signed with them and we soon put out my first single, “When The World Ends”. The response from radio and TV was great. In my opinion, nothing that is worth doing will ever be easy, but it can be fun and natural.
You’re quite popular on Vine – what kind of reception do you get from there as opposed to other social networking sites/apps?
Vine is the place I get to showcase quick clips of me singing songs I am enjoying at the moment, as well as my original tracks. Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are the places where I get to connect with my fans. Overall, people are pretty nice and accepting on Vine, but there are definitely a handful of people that like to stand out and will write crazy and mean comments. I don’t like online bullies but some of the comments can be funny.
What has been your favorite six second cover you’ve done?
I had the idea to take glasses and fill them with different amounts of water, and play the hook of “Animals” by Martin Garrix. It was the #1 video on the App for an entire day and currently has about 3,000,000 views! It’s so crazy how something you think of spontaneously and create in your room, can go viral within an hour of posting it.
Where would you say are your “inspirational” places that strike you with inspiration for a song?
Ah..I wish I could answer that. If I had a set place I could get inspiration from I would have 1,000 songs by now! Finding inspiration is like a game of hide and seek…sometimes it never wants to be found. Sometimes you literally have to go and search for it and tackle it. I’ll watch movies, documentaries, listen to current and old music, drive to random locations – you name it I’ve probably done it!
If you could collaborate with absolutely any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Chris Martin from Coldplay. Not only because he is THE MAN, but whatever he’s got going on in his head to create those incredible albums, I want to experience that. Drive somewhere peaceful, park, put on your headphones and pick any Coldplay album – you will be lost in music by the 3rd song.
What can you tell us about #MissionJM? We’ve seen the hashtag pop up on our timelines quite a lot!
MissionJM in a nutshell, is a group of my most dedicated fans who support my music, and me as a person. I randomly come up with ideas and messages that I want to spread, and I go to them to help me get the word out. Our biggest movement so far was anti-bullying. We focused on the struggles of being bullied and standing up for not only yourself, but for others.
What’s the most insane thing to ever happen to you?
Um…well since this happened recently, I’ll say it. It isn’t the most insane thing ever but pretty funny. I was on a train heading home from New York City. I was one of the first people on. Initially, no one is sitting around me until a group of 4 very big women decided to sit with me. By with, I pretty much mean they were practically sitting right on top of me while I was smashed against the window for an hour! People are hilarious!
What can we expect from you this year?
I will definitely keep you posted! I’m currently making some big “life decisions” and think I want to try the West Coast. I also plan on writing and making more music
Lastly, if your nipples fell off, what would you do?
Probably never go to the beach again. Maybe I would get nipple colored tattoos like some people do fake eyebrows. You heard it here first!
That’s a very good idea. We’ll have to keep that in mind in case our nipples decide to do a runner.
