Jordan Fisher is one pop star you really need to get to know right now. Despite only being 22 years old, Jordan has achieved a hell of a lot already. He was a a youth prodigy gymnast but he gave it all up for musical theatre. In a sense, he is a real life Troy (Zac Efron) from ‘High School Musical’.
He’s also in the class of Selena, Demi and Nick in that he appeared in Disney Channel shows like ‘iCarly’, ‘Thundermans’, ‘Liv and Maddie’, as well as ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ and ‘Teen Wolf’. Oh yeah and he also starred in ‘Grease: Live’ earlier this year as if that weren’t enough.
Jordan released his first single, ‘All About Us’ on 15th April and his debut EP on August 19th. He will be supporting Alicia Keys at London’s Apple Music Festival tomorrow Tuesday 20th. We caught up with Jordan ahead of his gig.
Hi Jordan! Can’t wait for your gig tomorrow. Could we talk a little about the music you’ll be playing? Which three emotions define your debut EP ‘Jordan Fisher’?
Wow what a question. I’ve been in the industry for a while now, a little over a decade and I’ve taken this time to live life and now I’m in a position to do whatever I want. TV and film have been really good to me over the last 8 or 9 years and I got to the point where if i didn’t start making music I was going to go crazy.
I think the people who inspired me to create this record, like Stevie Wonder, Lionel Ritchie and Prince helped give it a timeless feel as with their music. Ultimately, that’s what I wanted to achieve. I also need to feel nostalgia. I want a memory to pop up when you’re listening to my music. Also, relationships. Really, what song isn’t in some way about love. I want to give people stories that people probably have heard before but in the way I want to tell them.
Do you think it’s important to start off with an EP?
For me, it’s the way I always wanted to introduce myself. Leave people wanting more. Releasing ‘All About Us’ was the best way to make my introduction because it embodies who I am as an artist. I didn’t want to oversaturate people with a full album. The EP is like the second date. I’m kinda old fashioned and a little old school.
How did you celebrate the release of your EP?
The EP was actually released 30 minutes into a set I was playing in L.A. I got to celebrate that night with a lot of my team, my family and friends. I was home. That was an incredible way to experience that.
When I found out I was playing Apple Music Festival it was the same day I was playing my first stadium. This is something I’ve been dreaming about for years and I have to admit I did shed a few tears.
Having moved to L.A when you were 13, you must have met a lot of stars. What is the most starstruck you have felt?
I’m a bit of a sport nut so professional athletes really make me starstruck. Gymnastics was my whole life. It was everything I knew until I met a girl in fifth grade who I had a crush on and that’s the reason I joined drama club. The ratio of girls to boys in the drama club was good for me.
This was when you were 10?!
Oh yeah I’ve always been a romantic. I started thinking about my wedding when I was six. Priorities, man.
You performed in ‘Grease Live’ earlier this year. What other musical would you like to perform in?
‘Anastasia’ is my favourite animated movie and it’s on at Broadway in Conneticut right now. ‘Wicked’ and ‘Rent’ would be awesome too!
Which Disney animated character do you have the most in common with?
I guess Aladdin. His motivation and being able to turn nothing into something great – becoming a prince but still serving people. Being kind and being good. Living life with a sense of adventure.
Who is your Disney Channel BBF?
Olivia Holt! We’ve been best friends for years. We were each other’s first friend in L.A and we’ve been inseparable since the day we met. We did a song on her EP called ‘Thin Air. We had a blast doing that.
Are you more like Liv or Maddie?
I would like to say I’m a healthy combination of the two. Liv’s the entertainer and Maddie’s the sports nut and I’d love to say I’m a mix of both.
