It’s Johnny Orlando’s first column for MP! He’s about to become your new obsession

Guess what guys! We’ve got another exclusive column for you all to enjoy and you’re gonna love this one! For the next six weeks Canadian pop star/ YouTuber Johnny Orlando will be filling us all in on his adventures as he gears up to promote his debut single ‘Let Go’.

Hi everyone! My name is Johnny Orlando and I am excited to be writing my first blog series for Maximum Pop! and my UK fans.

You guys have been SO supportive over these past few years, and I’m looking forward to sharing exclusive content, talking about my new song release, and giving you a look into my daily life.

For those who don’t know me, I am a 13 year old singer, actor and YouTuber. I love entertaining people and making music. I started on YouTube about five years ago, when I was eight years old. My then-13-year-old sister, Darian, and I decided to record a cover of Justin Bieber’s ‘Mistletoe’, using the microphone on our laptop. Neither of us had any experience producing music or making videos so it was absolutely terrible but, for some reason, our cover started to gain some exposure online. Darian and I never thought anything would come out of our YouTube channel, but continued to make our home-recorded music videos just for fun.

Later that year, my cover of Justin Bieber’s song, “Boyfriend”, was entered into a Ryan Seacrest radio contest. I didn’t win, but I think that it really helped to introduce me to the music world as a legitimate recording artist.

Today, Darian and I are still working together. She does everything, from vetting my social media posts and producing videos, to helping me choose my outfits and do my hair (haha). We still make the occasional cover song on YouTube, but have shifted our focus toward producing original music. In December 2015, I released my first EP called ‘VXIIXI’, which was a huge step for me. It is so cool to be able to have your own music, especially when you are performing live.

Just last week, I released my newest original, ‘Let Go’, on iTunes. We worked on the song for a long time and I am really proud of the positive feedback that it has gotten so far. The song is unique because it explores a new, more mature sound, which highlights my growth as an artist and allows fans to follow this development. I think the lyrics are really important as well. ‘Let Go’ encourages listeners to stay focused on their dreams and aspirations, regardless of the people and obstacles that try and stand in their way. I love this message because it is something that I have experienced first-hand. Whether it is hateful comments on social media or someone telling you that you will never make it, in the music industry, there are always challenges that try and hold you back. If you haven’t heard my new song yet, check it out here!

Thanks so much for reading my first blog and for the endless support. I’ll see you next week!

David is the Head of Content at Maximum Pop!

Having studied Russian and Spanish at the University of Leeds, David moved to Moscow to work in the education sector. Upon returning to UK soil, David initially immersed himself in the wonderful world of MP! as a music writer.

Now head of all things content, David takes being a music fanboy to a whole new level, and can often be found dancing like there's nobody watching to 'Shout Out To My Ex', obsessing over Lauren Jauregui and defending Taylor Swift's honour.

David once appeared on TV in Armenia. Apparently, "it was awesome".
