INTERVIEW: We talk to Joe Conaboy about life after Kingsland Road.

We’ve been chatting to Joe Conaboy about what he’s been up to since Kingsland Road‘s split, recording his debut EP and playing  his first ever solo headline show next month.

As a former five-piece band member, what is it like now working as a solo artist?

Working as a solo artist is a new challenge, but it’s amazing. I’m loving it.

What are the pros and cons of performing alone versus performing with a band?

You get the dressing room to yourself! And more of the stage to jump round like a weirdo on.

We had a peek at your Twitter, and it looks like you’re spending a lot of time working in the studio. Can you tell us what a day in the studio is like?

A day in the studio is always fun and long! I usually head in with a song idea already in tact. We get down to work and just crack on. Nothing weird or interesting goes on really. Just making music. I do write songs in my boxers though. Just not with people as that would be weird. I like all the lights turned off when I’m singing too.

Sounds like you’re writing songs all the time. When do you think we’ll be able to buy your album?

You will be able to one day! I think in the more immediate future an EP will be gracing your pretty ears!

How has your sound changed since the Kingsland Road days?

Well it’s my sound now, so it’s just how my influences effect the music. I’m still constantly writing as you said, so I’m still experimenting with the sound.

How does it feel to be playing your first ever headline show?

It’s amazing, it’s quite overwhelming actually. This is only my 4th gig and it’s a headline show, which is very close to selling out.  I couldn’t do it without the fans so for that I’m massively grateful!

If you could collaborate with anyone in the music world right now, who would it be and why?

I’d love to do a song with The 1975. Their new tune ‘Love Me’ is so retro. The 80’s sound is funky. I think there’s a lot they have to say about the industry and how pop music has changed massively and I applaud that!

What’s your favourite song to cover?

I do a cover of Royal Blood which is great to perform. They’re a brilliant band.

What’s your favourite song to sing in the shower?

Abba – ‘Dancing Queen’ is a huge favourite of mine!

What’s your favourite show on television right now? Netflix included.

‘Sons of Anarchy’. Those three words are my greatest addiction right now. It’s crazy good.

Tell us your perfect Saturday.

My perfect Saturday consists of Food that is amazingly bad for me, a long lie in, some ‘Friends’ on the telly, blanket, old school vinyls, and some Ben & Jerry’s. If I haven’t just described the best Saturday ever then you suck, haha!

Joe Conaboy plays his first headline show at The Garage in London on November 8. Buy tickets here.
