We love Jason Derulo (or as he used to declare it ‘JASON DERUUUUUUUULOOO’) – he’s fit, he’s talented, he can do more backflips than a butt-kicking video game character, and he’s also really good at giving us some electropop jams that get us twerking (or not) on the dancefloor. He’s just gone and released his third studio album ‘Tattoos’ (with a suitably ink-heavy front cover) and we took a peek to see what the latest tunes sound like.
To start things off, there’s plenty to like here on Jason’s new album and things have definitely taken a turn for the more R&B-pop end of the spectrum as there’s only a couple of really massive electronic club bangers on here. Lead single ‘The Other Side’ remains the sweet and catchy thumper we all love to dance to in our rooms and new single ‘Talk Dirty To Me’ is a filthy grinding anthem that should incite mass humping across the land. Don’t deny it, you know it’s coming. In terms of other dancefloor-ready ditties, the Pitbull team-up tune ‘Fire’ is catchy enough and ‘Side Fx’ is a Chris Brown cast-off made much more likeable.
There are also some quite sweet ballads on the album – his duet with current girlfriend and all-round lovely human being Jordin Sparks, ‘Vertigo’ is a highlight and ‘Tattoo’ is a sweet enough tune. ‘Rest of Our Lives’ is a beautiful and slowly endearing song about true love and one we’d recommend for a V-Day release.
Is everything good? Well, there are a couple of bad tracks on show here – ‘Stupid Love’ is a Nineties tune that nobody really wanted and ‘With the Lights On’ and ‘Trumpets’ are both a bit surplus to requirrements.
Jason has properly come back with this latest album, following a potentially career-ending spinal injury and we’re all the more glad for his recovery, and while he’s equally at home with the sexy tunes and the loved-up odes, we kind of prefer the latter, particularly when he combines them with a killer club producer.
‘Tattoos’ perhaps isn’t the strongest material he’s put out there, but he’s an engaging, genuinely likeable guy with some killer moves and the songs are generally smooth, well-crafted and enjoyable. Jason’s best at giving us songs that will make you dance like a lunatic when no one’s watching. And we kind of love him for that.
