Introducing: Loreen!

Eurovision curse? What Eurovision curse! Okay, so it might have been a long, sad flight back to Vegas for Engelbert Humperdinck, but with her amazing winning song ‘Euphoria’ currently topping the charts all over Europe – and charting at #3 in the UK  entering the contest is looking like a pretty canny career move for Swedish singer Loreen.

But just who is this enigmatic Swedish popstrel with her Kate Bush dancing (ask your mum!) and Claudia Winkleman hair? To most of the world Loreen might have been unknown, but in Sweden she first came to fame as a contestant on the Swedish version of Pop Idol – the same show that first launched Agnes, of ‘Release Me’ fame.

After finishing fourth on Idol, Loreen took a few years out of the industry before entering the Swedish Eurovision qualifiers for the first time last year. Sweden take Eurovision rather more seriously than we do in the UK, and she didn’t quite make the cut, beaten by Eric Saade (no, us neither…) who came third with the cheesy but amazing ‘Popular’ in the big show. Nevertheless, ‘My Heart is Refusing Me’ was one of the biggest hits of 2011 in Sweden, and set the stage for Loreen’s return in 2012, when she sailed through the Swedish qualifiers en route to eventual Euro-glory.

So now that she’s become an overnight sensation there’s just the small matter of releasing her debut album, which is due in September. In addition to ‘Euphoria’ and ‘My Heart is Refusing Me’, Loreen also released a gorgeous midtempo ballad called ‘Sober’ last year which became another huge Swedish hit and should appear on the album; it really shows off her powerful and distinctive voice, and we think it could easily be another UK hit if she releases it here.

So all in all, things are looking pretty rosy for Loreen right about now, and we couldn’t be happier. She’s got the voice, the tunes and the attitude, so here’s hoping she follows the illustrious likes of ABBA and Celine Dion beyond Eurovision success and into the pop record books!
