Expectations could not have been higher as me and my son set out on our journey to see ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’! Before I start to review the film Viking hats off to the entertainers at Vue who managed to put a smile on everyones faces on a baking hot Sunday.
The film gripped both myself and my son (who’s 2 and a dragon connoisseur) from start to finish, with such amazing attention to detail and a plot that captivated and amazed all ages in the room.
Although this film is set 5 years later than the first instalment all the characters have aged accordingly and have stayed true to their personalities, making it impossible not to be emotionally involved from the start.
[SPOILER ALERTS] Hiccup and Toothless are closer than ever and Hiccup’s relationship with Astrid has blossomed! In this film Hiccup meets his mother (Valka) who he’d never met after being carried off when he was just a baby *sob*.
Although this film is fast paced the relationship doesn’t feel rushed and we get to know Valka as a person before she plays a more central role. Gobber who plays a character funny for both parents and kids who’s a personal favourite of mine stays on the pedestal I placed him on after the first film, and deservedly so!
This movie has a little bit of everything, for everyone. Without giving too much away some parents had to take crying children out of the film to calm them down after what could only be described as some of the most emotional viewing children this age must go through. The plot quickly moves on from this and builds to what is a truly breathtaking, massive set of events in which Hiccup and Toothless come together to free all the dragons.
This film is jam packed with new dragons, characters and action. I felt overwhelmed in the best possible way. Prepare to be blown away as you watch the land and weather change in the blink of an eye as you travel on the back of dragons.
MP! 8 out of 10. A must see for every child and adult that loves fun!
