Pay close attention to this name, PEOPLE! Halima Aden has made history this week by being the first ever hijab-wearing model to sign to global talent agency, IMG. YES GIRL. *claps*
Halima first caught the media’s attention way back in November, when she participated in Miss Minnesota USA. She entered because she wanted to break barriers for Muslim women and was the first ever teen to wear a hijab during the pageant.
“I just want to go on as myself” said told the Star Tribune. “When you have a lot of women in our state that do wear the hijab, we should be able to see that everywhere.”
As well as wearing a hijab, the 19-year-old was also the first model ever to wear a burkini during the swimwear round. Unsurprisingly, she looked absolutely gorgeous!
Since Miss USA, Halima has been a vital voice in the fashion industry. Last Wednesday she walked in Kanye West‘s Yeezy Season 5 show at New York Fashion Week. The model opened the show and she absolutely slayed!
Halima Aden becomes the first woman to walk in an @NYFW show with a hijab on. She walked for Kanye West's Yeezy line and slayed. I am so proud of her and consider her to be an inspiration. Muslim Women CAN. Halima will also be in Carine Roitfeld’s upcoming CR Fashion Book, which is due out March 2017. She teased a photo on her Instagram page and OMG it looks stunning.
The model shared the news of joining IMG on Instagram. She told her followers that she’s excited to spread the message that diversity IS beauty and that they should never change themselves, they should change the game.
Halima is an important first for fashion and it goes without saying that we hope the rest of the industry follows IMG’s lead.
