Kanye got cancelled, but we still had a ball: 5 things you missed at Governors Ball 2016

The iconic Governors Ball Music Festival rocked New York City this past weekend and we got the chance to be there for all the fun festival action. In its sixth year as NYC’s most popular music festival, GovBall had some pretty big names lined up for the weekend including Kanye West, Haim and Years & Years. The festival also featured a wide variety of delicious food trucks and other activities like the hilarious silent disco. Check out our highs and lows of Governors Ball 2016…

We spotted Shawn Mendes! And Carly Rae Jepsen made an appearance with The Knocks.

In addition to Shawn Mendes roaming around GovBall and hanging out in the crowd like a normal person, pop princess Carly Rae Jepsen made an onstage appearance with The Knocks. They performed ‘Love Me Like That’ and crowds went wild (though we wished she’d sing ‘Call Me Maybe’).

HAIM rocked out in the rain

Even though the rain stopped Sunday’s show, Saturday night’s performances still went on despite some rain getting in the way. Despite the crazy weather, the sisters of Haim rocked the festival with all their most popular songs including ‘The Wire.’ Fans also disregarded the rain and enjoyed their entire set while getting super muddy.

We had some crazy food including a Ramen Burger and Black Tap Milkshake

If you have ever been on a food Instagram account, you’ve seen a Black Tap Milkshake. They are absolutely enormous and not to mention they have tons of toppings and extras including cookies and lollipops. Fortunately, we were able to skip the one hour wait at their restaurant and get one at their stand at GovBall! In addition to the amazing black and white milkshake we had, we were able to finally get our hands on the Ramen Burger. Basically, it is a burger with two patties of Ramen noodles in place of a bun. Crazy? Yes. Delicious? Absolutely.

Mac Miller (and a few others) pay tribute to Prince.

Many of the GovBall 2016 artists paid tribute to the late pop icon, Prince, at the festival this past weekend. Mac Miller, Beck, HAIM and Bloc Party all did renditions of Prince songs including ‘Purple Rain’ and ‘I Would Die 4 U’. They are among the many artists honouring Prince at their performances recently, including Beyoncé.

Kanye West (and a whole bunch of other artists) got cancelled

Mother nature was not on our side on Sunday when torrential rain and predicted lightening called for a full cancellation of Sunday’s show. The festival gates did not open, and unfortunately, no artists got to play. Sunday’s crowd was one of the biggest, as Kanye West was the headlining act. Other acts unable to perform were Two Door Cinema Club, Galantis, and Death Cab For Cutie. Although we wish the show had gone on, it was for the safety of festival goers, and GovBall is refunding all its Sunday customers and three day ticket holders.

Overall, Governors Ball 2016 was a ball! It was a weekend of amazing live music, trendy festival fashion, and of course, great food. Even though the festival got cut short by the rain, we still had an amazing time and can’t wait to be back next year! Be sure to check out the official GovBall 2016 recap video below:
