The news that ‘Gilmore Girls‘ is being revived by Netflix for four one-off ninety-minute episodes has pretty much made our year. Nothing can top 2016 now — it’s already peaked in our opinion. For real, though, the thought of copious cups of coffee from Luke’s Diner and Lorelai’s unbeatable wit is having us nearly wetting ourselves with anticipation. Not to mention the mere thought that all three of Rory’s past boyfs are set to make a reappearance.
We’re really not sure how we’re still vertical at this point, especially now we’ve been given the greatest gift of all with some first look pictures. You can bet that the theories for what to expect have officially started flowing…
1. THE CAST OF ‘GILMORE GIRLS’ ARE DEFYING THE LAWS OF PHYSICS
It’s been nine years since we left Stars Hollow. Nine years since Rory prepared to become a bit of a jet-setter and follow one of the presidential campaigns. Nine years since Lorelai’s memorable rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, ultimately leading to a reconciliation kiss with Luke. And we’ve felt each of those years as we’ve binge-watched all seven seasons over and over again, praying for just a little bit more Gilmore madness.
Well, it’s coming and it turns out… The cast haven’t aged one bit. It’s inevitable they will feel the loss of the late Edward Herrmann (who played Richard Gilmore), but they’re riding out their grief like pros and looking absolutely flawless whilst doing it. Just look at Emily Gilmore in these first-look pictures. We’re starting to wonder if the ‘Gilmore Girls’ writers are flirting with a time travel plot line. There’s no other reason we can think of as to how the Gilmore ladies are looking so fresh and timeless – apart from fab genes, of course.
2. ARE FRIDAY DINNERS STILL HAPPENING? YES… BUT BETTER
Following that line of thought, Friday night dinners are still very much a thing, don’t you worry. The location, however, is, uh, out of this world. No, seriously. Emily Gilmore felt she needed a change after the loss of her dear husband and running the DAR (that is, the Daughter’s American Revolution) just wasn’t cutting it. Instead, Emily set her sights on intergalactic affairs. So yeah, keeping up the tradition of Friday night dinners is a bit more of a mission considering they’re in SPACE! But the views are definitely worth it, as are the ever so slightly longer journeys, in which Lorelai and Rory can recite all fifty states about a gazillion times.
3. THE BACHELOR COMES TO STARS HOLLOW
With the confirmation that all three of Rory’s old flames will be returning for the revival series, we have to wonder which one she’ll end up with — if any of them. For all we know, there might be a new heartthrob on the horizon. Still, we have an inkling it’ll be a choice between childhood sweetheart Dean, broody bookworm Jess, or adventurous, fellow Life and Death Brigade member Logan.
If that’s the case, we think the next season of ‘The Bachelor’ might be taking place right in the heart of Stars Hollow. Dean, Jess and Logan will compete against one another in a series of dates and challenges to prove to Rory which ship is truly endgame. Ultimately, though, Rory won’t end up with any of them, because she’s content being an independent girl boss. Girl power ftw!
4. ‘STARS HOLLOW: THE MUSICAL’ ACTUALLY HAS A STAR-STUDDED CAST
It would seem that Babette and Miss Patty are always up to something and the ‘Gilmore Girls’ revival will be no different. Turns out they’re holding ‘Stars Hollow: The Musical’ auditions and we reckon those dreams of seeing Harry Styles take to the stage on more theatrical grounds might not be far off now. The boy is clearly looking to broaden his creative prospects and, seeing as he’s already been rumoured to appear in a big-shot Christopher Nolan film, we don’t think his musical theatre debut will be far off.
5. KIRK DOES *SOMETHING* WEIRD
Thinking about it, seeing Kirk do something odd isn’t so much a theory as ‘Gilmore Girls’ proverb. It would go against all that perfectly executed characterisation for Kirk to suddenly be, well, normal — although what a plot twist that would be!
But no, this theory actually involves the slightly loopy Kirk we know and love and those famous town meeting scenes. Remember the time when he did a pretty freaky, reborn performance? Well, we think the slightly shocked, somewhat bored facial expressions on these town meeting-goers’ faces stems from the three-hour-long interpretive dance Kirk is performing of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘.
6. THE DRAGONFLY INN’S SURVIVAL HANGS IN THE BALANCE
Unfortunately, Melissa McCarthy, who played Lorelai’s best friend, Sookie St. James, isn’t set to be returning for the revival due to the fact she is killing it in Hollywood. It’s all very sad and leads us to believe the Dragonfly Inn might be in need of a helping hand — considering Sookie was the culinary genius behind all that great food, and all. And food is very important, obvs.
Well, it’s alright, don’t sweat it. Because Lorelai might just have her very own superhero in the form of Luke Danes. Considering he owns a diner, we’re under good authority that he knows his way around a kitchen. Not to mention Lorelai and Luke are in love and so he’ll do just about anything to help her out. Swoon.
So, okay, that last theory wasn’t all that wild — you caught us. But it would be super, super nice if that, out of all the other theories, could happen. Those two deserve their happy ending. And if not, we guess we can live with the thought that takeout and Pop-Tart evenings are at least still a tradition Lorelai and Rory are keeping up. We hold their unique mother-daughter relationship very close to our hearts.
But what do you think? Do any of these crazy theories hold some ground? Would you like to see them in the form of beautifully written fanfiction, ’cause we kind of would. Tweet us @maximumpop!
