Don’t you just love being able to say “I told you so”?
One of our favourite things to do is to boast about how ahead of the curve we are. It’s a full time occupation, but we do find time to eat and sleep every now and again between episodes of extreme smugness.
But we’re feeling generous today so we’re going to share our insights about the world’s next YouTube sensation.
Daisy Clark is a typical 18 year old girl whose life has been turned upside down in a matter of moments. Her cover of the classic ‘Grease’ ballad, ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’, has amassed more than 10 million views since it was uploaded.
Daisy has been singing since she was 13 and has built herself a solid fanbase, including pop stars like James Arthur who shared her cover of his worldwide smash ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ on social media.
We can see why James was won over.
Daisy has been hotly tipped for international fame which is even more amazing seeing as she had only left her hometown of Cornwall twice before this year. Also, when she recorded her cover of ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ it was the first time she had ever sung the song.
We wanted you to be the first to introduce you to this budding pop star so we sat down for a deep and meaningful with Daisy herself:
Hi Daisy! So what is one thing everyone needs to know about you?
I am a musical, songwriting, seaside lover from Cornwall.
Which other YouTuber inspires you the most?
Gracie Francesca or Dodie Clark. Gracie’s channel is so raw and real and she uses her platform to talk about important issues especially with mental health and body image. She’s very inspiring, especially to young girls. Dodie is a YouTuber who inspired me to share my original songs online… if you haven’t heard her EP she recently released, you need to!
What is the most memorable vlog you have ever seen?
I watch a fashion vlogger called Jenn from ‘clothesencounters’ and she recently uploaded a vlog that her boyfriend secretly filmed, proposing to her. I may have cried a little.
How did you choose ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ and what does the song mean to you?
You could say that ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ chose me! I’ve uploaded music before but this song went viral like I never expected. I have always been in love with musicals and ‘Grease’ has always a favourites – my mum and I watch it all the time.
Before I recorded my cover, the song had been stuck in my head all day, so I spontaneously got my camera out, found the guitar chords and hit record, I’d never even sung it before.
I shared my video with with a platform called Music Crowns which helps unsigned and independent musicians get their music heard by a bigger audience. As soon as they shared it, things went crazy and I had comments from fans asking where they could get the track. The next thing I knew Warner was in touch and I was recording the track in a real studio and we’re releasing it on Spotify and iTunes this Friday 17th Feb/today!
What would it mean to you if Olivia Newton John gave your cover her blessing?
Since the song is so well known and loved, it would be amazing to have Olivia’s blessing. I was quite apprehensive about covering a song from a musical at first, as it’s quite different to what I usually do… let alone such an iconic song! I hope I’ve done it justice and Olivia and ‘Grease’ fans love it.
Which Disney animated character do you have the most in common with?
Probably Rapunzel from ‘Tangled’, since she has spent most her life in a tower (or little Cornwall for me) and then ventures into the world. I wish I had that magic hair though!
Which one out of Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat could you just not live without?
What are the top three things on your bucket list before you turn 20?
- Release my original music, I’m so passionate about songwriting and would love to share it with the world. I’m planning on releasing an album later this year.
- Travel more. I would really love to go to Australia! Maybe not before I’m 20, but in the near future.
- Maybe get to 100,000 subscribers? Ambitious, but not impossible!!
If a genie allowed you to change three things in the world, what would you change and why?
- Social media ‘trolling’. Can you imagine a world where social media is full of positivity/constructive criticism?
- Stop bullying
- Give everyone access to clean water.
