Martin Solveig is not only one of the world’s biggest DJs, whose global mega smashes include the likes ‘Hello’ and ‘Intoxicated’, but also an all round nice guy and cool dude.
Despite his array of hits, we felt the world deserved to know Martin a lot better. What makes him tick? How did he become the massive superstar he is today and what does he think about the state of the world in general? We found out exactly all that *smug face*
Hi Martin! So which emoji best represents how you’re feeling about 2017 so far, and why?
The rocket represents my life especially on social network where everything comes and goes in a blink. It’s fun. The other me, you can’t represent with an emoji because you can’t find him on social networks.
These two sides make my natural balance.
What was the inspiration for your new single ‘PLACES’ and the video?
The starting point for ‘PLACES’ was really spontaneous, Ina and I had a writing session planned. I met her in Norway, she’s a very caring, sensitive and selfless person. I was deeply touched by her universe and we came up with something that was new but natural to me. This song makes me real proud, it’s as melancholic as it is uplifting, an alarm call for togetherness.
The idea behind the video is simple. As you know I spend a lot of time in Ibiza with my family and friends during the MyHouse season at Pacha so I asked Clayton Vomero (a very talented directed whose work I love) to come to put this singular vibe in the spotlight.
When did you know you wanted to be a DJ?
I never really decided to become one, producing and sharing music have always been a part of me. There was no question about it. All my choices were driven by that will.
Do you have any advice for young people looking to start a career as a producer or DJ?
Only one ! Do your own thing ! Bjork had the perfect words to describe the process:
“Don’t focus on what people will think of your music, train yourself not to think that way. The only thing you can do is to please yourself, the more selfish your are, the more generous you are”.
Which song of yours means the most to you and why?
‘The Night Out’ is my favourite because it mirrors exactly the attitude I wanted it to reflect.
Which one out of Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat could you just not live without?
Instagram is my fav right now I find it the best way to use these 5 or 10 spare minutes you have a few times a day. People don’t post too much on Insta, it’s less invasive, also more elegant than the other socials.
What is your favourite Netflix show at the minute?
Give us your unfiltered opinions on Donald Trump.
I understand why a majority of Americans voted for him. Unfortunately I don’t share their opinion mainly for one reason, we live in an open world and there’s no way back on that matter. We need to learn how to collaborate best and share strengths, weaknesses, resources, on a worldwide scale.
I know these are sweet words and I’m not really entitled to express myself on these matters but they actually matter to me. History has given enough examples of catastrophes based on populism and protectionism. It’s a bit of a dark era right now but we’ll get over it.
Who would you like to perform at your presidential inauguration?
How do you understand the phrase ‘when the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose’?
You’re referring to Meryl Streep’s speech at the Golden Globes. As I mentioned earlier, times are tough, we all have to get personally involved to make things change. Internet is a fantastic and universal tool to fight against this idea.
Thanks for talking to us Martin, we really appreciate your sharing your thoughts on how to deal with and process the important changes that have taken place over the last couple of weeks.
Now it’s your turn, let us know what your opinions are about Donald Trump and his policies and please do share any advice you may have.
