Conor Maynard is 19, from Brighton, into awkward YouTube conversation, and some actually quite good wibbly-wobbly covers, and gets compared to Justin Bieber a lot. He’s got 50 million YouTube views, as many teenage knickers in a twist, a record deal with a major label and once had a late-night family-safe Skype conversation with Ne-Yo. His unreleased debut album has already seen him work with the producers behind Usher, Mariah Carey, Jessie J, Rihanna and Drake, and after 150,000 votes he won MTV’s One To Watch 2012 poll. This makes him officially a Very Big Deal. In fact, the only thing Conor Maynard doesn’t have is a debut single. Or, we should say, didn’t. Because ‘Can’t Say No’ is here, and it’s today’s Alarm Pop song of the day.
Rather than capitalise on that knicker-twisting voice with an overblown, tuned-up ballad, Conor’s laidback debut is a hypnotic, slutty club beat production piece with a Timberlake vocal, an infectious ‘girls, girls, girls’ refrain and the ‘Houston, I think we’ve got a problem’ line that is in approximately 12% of pop hits released in the last 5 years. It’s cooler and more exciting then you’d expect, and probably a lot filthier than your mum would like. Not the track that would’ve been logical to release considering his pubic hair-free fanbase, but he’s a much more interesting pop star for it. 5 points for bravery Conor.
