X Factor winner Ben Haenow takes early lead in Christmas number one race

It’s becoming a very close one but it seems that X Factor winner Ben Haenow might just nab this year’s Christmas number one.

Ben’s ‘Something I Need’ has shifted 75,000 copies since it’s digital release on Monday and with physical copies of the single hitting record stores and supermarkets today, those sales will only rise.

However this week’s reigning number one single, Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’ has sold around 52,000 copies and with it being the second most streamed track of the week, it could help the lads take the number one spot for a second week.

Your friend and ours Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, had this to say about the race for Christmas number one: “The week of the Christmas Number 1 race is always among the most exciting in the Official Singles Chart calendar – and early data indicates that we have a genuine battle on our hands in 2014. By Sunday, we will know who has won out – but, for the moment, the race is on!” It’s all very exciting, isn’t it?

Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’, Olly Murs and Demi Lovato’s ‘Up’, and Take That’s ‘These Days’ currently sit at number three, four and five respectively.

Ed Sheeran’s ‘X’ is currently the front-runner for this year’s Christmas number one album.
