Recently we got the chance to put a few questions to Monica, who runs the beautiful bookstagram account bookishjourney. With over 25k followers and a feed-to-die-for, we were thrilled to find out ALL the answers to how she got started on Instagram, what she loves the most about being part of the community, and just how she got her hands on this extra special Maggie Stiefvater-inspired prop.
What first attracted you to bookstagram and made you begin posting bookish photos? I actually had a friend from Tumblr whose Instagram I followed, and hers was the very first bookstagram account that I followed. It looked like so much fun to post about books and do book tags as well as interact with other book lovers, that I decided to make a separate Instagram account for books.
How long have you been a part of the bookish corner of Instagram? For two years now.
Could you describe your Instagram “aesthetic” in only three words? Minimalist, bright, consistent.
What is one of your fave things about bookstagram? Probably sharing my love for books and interacting with others over our love for books!
And now, let’s spotlight some of your incredible pics! What is your favourite prop you’ve used in your photos? This Cabeswater license plate I received from Big Honcho Media in celebration of the release of ‘The Raven King’, the finale to one of my favourite YA series.
the story of tonight (reprise) • hamilton the musical | HAPPY HAPPY RELEASE DAY TO THE RAVEN KING 💙💙💙 and a super huge thanks again to @scholasticinc and @ireadya for sending me this wonderful package! if you know me, you know how much i absolutely adore the raven cycle (every post about trc somehow always involves CAPS LOCK BC I JUST GET SO EXCITED). this series is about magic, psychics, dreams, etc., but it's also about friendships and families and love and understanding and class struggles and death and just. GAH. so many themes, so many great characters, and yet it's all pulled together very beautifully by the queen @maggie_stiefvater (who also designed the tarot cards btw. goals.) – i have about 200 pages left in the raven king (rip me) and i'm loving every minute of it. i won't say anything more bc ***spoilers*** but i'll hopefully finish it this weekend and have a review posted next weekend! #SAVEGANSEY #ad
Is there one book that’s so beautiful you just can’t help but take a million pictures of it? This is hard to choose, but probably ‘Six of Crows’! I don’t take many multiple photos of one book, but I love staring at this one. I love the cover itself and the black stained pages (!!!). It’s also one of my favourite YA fantasy books.
how does a bastard, orphan, son of a farmer and a kerchman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in ketterdam, by providence, impoverished, in squalor, grow up to be lieutenant of the dregs? —————————————— hamilton meets six of crows – ham of crows??? another hamilton mashup attempt by yours truly (the previous one being harry potter. is it also fitting that i'm currently waiting outside of richard rogers theatre to enter the live lottery and see ham4ham?) —————————————— anyways; i finished six of crows two days ago and absolutely LOVED it – i'll post a review later this month. meanwhile, i'll be crying over kaz + inej and matthias + nina and jesper + wylan while (im)patiently waiting for crooked kingdom. also: s/o again to ava @bloomsbery for getting me hooked on the grishaverse and causing me all this emotional pain 🤗
Overall, ultimate fave picture you’ve ever taken? This photo basically encompasses my whole aesthetic (or at least the aesthetic I try to achieve).
We love it! Thanks so much Monica for chatting to us! You can follow her on Insta at bookishjourney if you don’t already.
