Beth Sherburn had a pretty good year last year if her support slot on The Saturdays’ Greatest Hits Tour, debut single featuring Lil Wayne and amazing YouTube covers are anything to go by. We thought it was just about time to get back in contact with Beth and she felt the same about us so we got together and she answered a few questions to make sure we were well and truly caught up with everything going on in the Land of Beth.
Were you always interested in being in the music business?
Beth: I knew from the age of seven years old that music was what I wanted to do. I was chosen to sing a solo at my primary school, it was a Celine Dion song and I absolutely loved performing on stage! Music definitely brought me out of my shell, from that day music has always been in my life! Music is always something I’ve wanted to do. I’ve always worked really hard studying music. I participated in local and national competitions from a young age. I performed in musicals starring alongside George Costigan and Matthew Kelly, attended music, choir and writing workshops, singing and piano lessons as well as performing at many world class venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham NIA Arena and Manchester Arena.
When did it all really take off for you?
It’s been a gradual journey really! I’ve just stayed focused and working really hard. Last year was an amazing year for me and my career. Performing in front of thousands of people and touring with The Saturdays was amazing! Performing at Wembley Arena was a dream come true.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
There are many artists over the years that have influenced me musically. When I was younger my parents used to listen to Dusty Springfield, Carole King, Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys. Alicia was my initial inspiration to write songs. I was also listening to a lot of Coldplay whilst writing my latest EP. Lyrically they definitely inspire me.
What can we expect from your upcoming album?
My sound has definitely matured. I’ve grown as an artist. I like to be really descriptive when writing. I’ve pushed myself and this is because I have been experimenting more in the studio. I’ve been more involved in the production side of my music and I’ve loved it! I have learned a great deal by working with amazing people over the past year. I’m so excited for everyone to hear my new music. I think it’s the best material I’ve written to date!
Do you use a lot of your own experiences to influence your songwriting?
My songs are my stories. My life experiences whether they are personal or inspired by others, this is what shapes my work.
Who is your dream tour buddy?
Beyonce, that would be amazing. She’s the ultimate diva! The energy she creates on stage is incredible, and Jay-Z is a genius! I was lucky enough to see them perform together at The O2 and for me seeing them sing together was the highlight of the Mrs Carter Show.
If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
I love LA! I’ve been a few times now and I love the weather and lifestyle over there. It’s an amazing place to record music too!
What’s your favourite social media platform?
I am loving Instagram at the moment! But I love all of my social media sites. I love talking to my fans!
Where’s your favourite shopping destination?
I love shopping in Paris! For me it’s definitely the world capital of fashion!
What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on stage?
I was just about to perform in front of 20,000 people. I was about to go on stage and my outfit fell apart! My poor mum had to pin my costume together just before I performed!
Are you a morning or evening person?
I’m definitely a night owl! I prefer to be in a studio recording later in the evening.
What was the first CD you owned?
It was Britney Spears’ ‘…Baby One More Time’. I loved that album!
What’s your favourite city to perform in?
I lover performing in London! The crowds are always full of energy.
Do you prefer reality TV or fictional shows?
Reality! I love watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians!
Starter or dessert?
Definitely a dessert! I love a chocolate brownie any day!
