It’s been a while since we’ve had some (good) Alexandra Burke music so we were very excited when the announcement of her new EP dropped and today is the glorious day that the record arrived! Available for free from MailOnline for just 48 hours (hurry!), Alexandra is back on form with her latest offering ‘#New Rules’! Ooh, we love a good hashtag…
The EP opens with some weird voice mail message thing – not as good as Missy Elliot’s ‘How Ya Doin?’ one either – which sees some of Alex’s friends, including some celebs such as Aston from JLS and Jenny Francis (who?), asking about the new EP. This ‘Leave A Message’ introduction made us feel a bit dubious about how the rest of the record would play out but fear not, Alexandra redeemed herself with a hauntingly beautiful rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’. Next up is ‘Day Dream’ which opens with a piece of monologue – how exciting! “I really didn’t wanna talk about this. I think it’s time,” Alexandra explains before launching into the ballad.
The second half of the EP kicks off with the very saucy ‘Seduce You’ – a collaboration with Wretch 32 – which is certainly a highlight of the mini-album. Heading back to her Jamaican roots next, Alex showcases ‘Bounty Hunter’, an infectious tune that bounces from speaker to speaker and features some speech from her “parents” (Maximum Pop! can neither confirm nor deny whether it is indeed the real parents of Alexandra Burke that feature on the track). ‘Bounty Hunter’ is probably our favourite song from the new material. The final track on the EP is another ballad; this one is called ‘Try’. This song really shows of Alexandra’s strong voice and should remind people why she won The X Factor five years ago – no, we can’t believe it’s been that long either!
On the whole, this EP is very very good. It sounds like the best songs from the floptastic last album ‘Heartbreak On Hold’ and shows that Alexandra’s imminent third album could be as good as the star’s debut offering ‘Overcome’. We suggest you download the mini-album (especially as it’s free!) for some great fresh songs from the Beast herself!
