Anyone that likes to completely lose themselves in a crackin’ book will know how terrible the come-down can be once its over. Whether its the end of a series, or just a particularly emosh standalone, book hangovers sneak up and punch you in the guts when you finish that final chapter.
But fear not fellow bookworms, we’ve put together a list of signs and symptoms along with some suggestions as to how to get over that hangover too.
1. You feel a desperate need to hide under the duvet. For like, a week. At least.
2. The lingering emotions you have for the characters are too easily placed upon people IRL.
3. You feel irrational anger, heartache, anxiety as though that face-slap of an ending actually happened to you, and not a made-up person. (IT WAS REAL!)
4. You’ve ordered the rest of the series, plus everything else that author has ever written, ever.
5. The thought of reading anything ever again makes you feel sick to the stomach.
6. The sun is too bright. How dare it shine on a day such as this? Does it not realise what happened to <insert favourite character>?
7. Staring dumbly at the Goodreads page for the book because surely it was part of a series. But there is no mention of a sequel. #dyingontheinside
8. With no sequel in the foreseeable future, fanfiction has become a viable option.
9. You try to write a review for your blog… but it’s just too soon to relive it all again.
10. You start to wonder what the point of reading is. What is “read”? What is “life”?
11. Curling up into a ball is a life choice, and you’re making it.
12. An impossible feeling of hopelessness and heartbreak.
But fear not, bookfam, we got you. Here’s a few suggestions how to work through it as pain-free as possible.
Sunglasses. If you’ve been up all night finishing that beautiful monster of a book then you’ll probably have bags as black as night, and some serious eye strain to boot. Put on your fave shades and look like a total boss. Hangover? What hangover?
Read something new. We know, we know. It’s the hardest part of a book hangover; feeling like you’ll never read a book ever again. But you know you will eventually, deep down. So hit up your TBR and pick something completely different from your last read.
Read something old. There is no shame in comfort reading at a time like this. Grab that book that never fails to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Don’t let us down now, Anna!!

Sleep on it. Seriously. Sleep. There’s not much that can’t be made better by a good night’s sleep, or even a cheeky afternoon nap.
Don’t feel bad for feeling bad. Sometimes all you can do is roll with it. Feel all the feels and let them work their way through your system. But don’t ever let your brain tell you that this isn’t ok. Books are powerful, dude. If anyone ever judges you for loving a book too much than who are they anyway? Pfft.
Head online. There’s a whole world full of like-minded book nerds out there that will happily comfort you or offer moral support. ‘Cause we’ve all been there. Book hangovers aren’t nice, and they certainly are not pretty. Bookish friends are the bestest friends.
