J K Rowling has been spoiling us lately. Between Pottermore revelations, ‘Cursed Child’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts’ we’re smitten on all this Harry Potter stuff.
But what are we supposed to do when we’ve read it all, seen it all, twice and thrice over? Find something with a similar spark, of course. Here’s our suggestions:
‘Carry On’ by Rainbow Rowell – because DUH! It’s probably the closest you’re going to come to filling that Harry Potter gap in your soul. Just kick back, relax into it and ENJOY it.
‘The Iron Trial’ by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare – Callum Hunt wants to fail so badly, but he legit fails at failing and despite being warned off magic by his dad he’s off to the Magisterium. Adventure ensues!
‘Half Bad’ by Sally Green – Described as “Harry Potter with a hard-on”, this series could definitely be described as darker, brasher, and harsher. BUT SO GOOD!
‘Sabriel’ by Garth Nix – an epic quest, supernatural danger and lots of magical intrigue. You’ll be binge reading this adventure before you even realise it!
‘Witch & Wizard’ by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet – Brother and sister snatched away from their parents, locked up, but other things, magical things, are set free. they discover themselves a destiny they never knew they had!
‘Nevernight’ by Jay Kristoff – Deadly assassins and an apprentice. A shadowy gift. This is one for the Slytherins. Without a doubt.
‘Touch of Power’ by Maria V. Snyder – Sure, we could have chose the Study series, but perhaps, when matching it with Potter, this one just about wins. With great healing powers, comes great cost and Avery is paying it.
‘The Raven Boys’ by Maggie Stiefvater – Mmm. Boys. And these boys you’ll fall in love with. You’ll want each one as a best friend. You’ll never want the series to end!
‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’ by Rick Riordan – Because nothing says “destiny” or “chosen one” like a half god, eh? And if you haven’t already tried this series… Hoo boy. Be prepared. It’ll consumer you!
‘Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy’ by Cassandra Clare et al. – Because school. Supernatural school. And it’s probs our fave “other” fandom when we’re not obsessing over Hogwarts. Truth.
‘Nightschool by Svetlana Chmakova – A place for werewolves, vampires and a certain kind of witches to get educated. A push and pull of darkness and light, with young witch Alex at the centre of it.
