Being a member of a top girl group is something every girl dreams of, but as bands like Fifth Harmony and Little Mix have revealed, the job comes with its fair share of drama. The latest hit musical to arrive in London’s West End shows us just what it’s like.
If you’re a Beyoncé fan, you’ll definitely know the 2006 movie ‘Dreamgirls,’ which was a huge hit and won two Oscars and three Golden Globes. You might not know that the film was based on a stage musical, and the first ever London production has just opened at the Savoy Theatre. We got the chance to see it on opening night, and, as Jesy Nelson would say, it was like Christmas Day came early.
The new production of ’Dreamgirls’ stars Amber Riley, famous for playing Mercedes in ‘Glee.’ She takes on the lead role of Effie White, played by Jennifer Hudson in the film, and this means she gets to sing the ‘Dreamgirls’ song everyone knows: ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.’ She’s 100% perfect for the role, and her performance of ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’ was so powerful, it literally left us shaking!
The show is set in the 1960s and ’70s, and Effie is a member of a girlband called The Dreamettes. ‘Dreamgirls’ charts their rise to success, and the trouble when they get to the top. It covers issues that we can all relate to (even if we’re not famous pop stars), such as body image, boyfriend trouble, and being pitted against other girls for opportunities at work.
Just like Little Mix and Fifth Harmony, The Dreamettes have to deal with ups and downs in their careers and personal lives, but they have a sisterly strength which shines through and makes their performances together completely magical. Watching ‘Dreamgirls’ is like being at a concert, seeing some of the most talented singers perform catchy pop songs and beautiful ballads. Plus, this musical is challenging ‘Aladdin’ for its title of the sparkliest show in the West End.
Whether you’re totally geeky for musicals like us, or you’re a girlband fan who’s never been to the West End, ‘Dreamgirls’ is an absolute must-see. Grab your tickets for 2017 so you won’t miss the amazing Amber Riley stealing the show.
